Hi guys,
I recently respecced from broccoli healer to boomkin and I'm trying to improve my dps. It's nothing fancy (i run heroic 5 man's mostly) but still trying to do my best. Depending on the group and the dungeon I do 3 - 3.5k dps, wearing 4/5 t9 (gs 4.9k if that means anything). I think my rotation is solid but i'm a bit afraid of using starfall as to not pull any unwanted groups.
How do you guys handle this? Only on bosses or do you have a way of telling when it's safe to use it?

The moonkins I know seem to use Starfall whenever they can, to pull off 9-10k DPS at the start of an instance in blues.
I suppose it depends on your healer. I, as a healer, am generally fine with having a shaman or druid tank occasionally. In fact had a kitty tanking all of Violet Hold this morning, it was fun.

The problem is that kittyform does 46% less threat per damage and that it doesn't have spammable AoE compared to bearform.
Incoming damage isn't likely to be much of an issue since you still have oodles of hp and close to 50% dodge if you have decent tank gear.

Just start using it whenever it is up and you have a bit of range to other gourps. You'll fairly quickly get a feel for when it is safe and when it isn't. If you do pull another group, then often the group can handle it. If not - the run back isn't too bad :)
You could always try popping it in the world with mobs nearby to practice there without wiping groups :)

I was hoping that there would be an addon that shows a circle on the ground or something. It seems there was an addon that did this (AVR) but that it got broke in the latest patch. or something like the /range checker in DBM but then for mobs.
Is there something like this? Or do I just have to practise and get a feel for the range?

I've tried kitty tanking, but if there's a decent retadin or fury warrior or just a few good dps there it's no use.
Edit: The fact that I'm clueless as a kitty doesn't help though

in addition with glyph of starfall it seems like a nice dps boost
(third glyph to be glyph of starfire or glyph of innervate i suppose)

Hey,
in the first instance I did I used starfall regularly (in combination with the above glyphs and the addon RangeDisplay) and my dps has gone up with about 500 :)
lets see if I can get it up more ... :)

Just had a discussion about it in /g yesterday and one of the moonkins who have a clue said that Glyph of Focus is a glyph you should use. It does deal with the range issue, I suppose.
Pretty sure pve boomkins should be using Moonfire, Starfire, and Insect Swarm glyphs; though that last one may be debatable in favor of Focus instead, not sure.
EJ says Starfire, Moonfire, Starfall is the way to go. They recommend swapping in Glyph of Focus (replacing Moonfire) on AoE fights where range is not an issue. This would include heroics, I think.
Raid damage is (usually) all about single target DPS, so for that reason, Starfall affecting glyphs will usually be seen as low priority. With prices these days and how easy it is to swap them out, you could easily switch any time it was going to be optimal for a fight.
You'll already be doing oodles of DPS with Starfire in heroics. No need to blow a glyph on getting a 10% bonus. Better to get the Moonfire glyph, especially once you get 4pT9 and Moonfire ticks start to crit.
I ran a heroic in my healing gear and a Boomkin spec and I did 8-12k DPS on trash pulls, depending on the size of the pull. Good times. Of course, I did the same with my Kitty, but there was an entire tier of raid gear in between the two characters.

I've been trying out some things. Thanks to glyph of focuss I felt comfortable enough to start using starfall without the fear of pulling any extra groups. I popped starfall almost every time it was of cool down. Result is my DPS went up with about 1.5k! Starfall is now my number one dps ability (>30%). good times :)

Yeah, I keep mixing up Starfire and Starfall. You should see me buy glyphs, it's horrible.
Starfall is rad. I sometimes only use Starfall during trash pulls, simply because a Hurricane on top of it would pull aggro.
As for the Moonfire glyph, it's really only useful on boss fights, but in heroics stuff dies so fast now that it really doesn't matter. If you're not raiding, stick to Glyph of Focus.
And with regards to range, you either have to get a feeling for how far 36 yards is, or use an addon. I'm using IceHUD for some easy to see health/mana displays and there's an option to turn on a range checker. It will give you an estimate of your target's range from you.

I throw mine up all the time when the tank has aggro. Generally I don't 5 man as dps, I go heals tho.
The only time you don't want to use it is when you're expecting adds to come out. Airship in ICC the adds that portal on to your ship, Deathwhisper when the adds spawn, and Saurfang when the BBs spawn.
In 5 mans, you should be almost max range from where the tank is tanking them anyway. That's about the reach of your Starfall. Usually mobs are not to your left or right, they're ahead of you. Just make sure the tank has them, cause it will gen pretty good threat.

I raid OS as boomkin in my 25 man guild, the glyphs of choice are always Starfire,Moonfire, and starfall.
As far as a boss always use it on CD between eclispes. Also keep in mind when the boss will summon adds that is the time to use starfall. Like on PP save it for when the first green ooze spawns it tends to splash PP and the ooze getting more damage out of it. Just don't starfall the whole first room in ICC like i did :D

Starfall Moonfire and Starfire are the glyphs you use. Don't deviate.
