Armor Pen gear?Follow

I just got back from a year off from the game and after gearing myself back up i've started to run ICC. I've read all the stuff I can find about armor pen, but I still had one question. At what point should I start giving up stats such as crit and haste for peices with ArP? Should I take the higher ArP gear as "off set" so to speak for later when I reach the higher totals?

I'm assuming you're MM, if you're not you should spec MM.
You always want to get pieces with ArP and Crit as secondary stats and a few with either of those two and some hit so you're hitcapped.
But with only 5% hit (or 4% as alliance) needed, you really only need 2-3 pieces with hit so everything else you want agi, crit and ArP.

You need 8% to not miss 83+ bosses. Unless you're assuming they have Focused Aim.

If you don't have FA you're doing it wrong.

Eh?

I may be crazy, but it seems like it's really easy to NOT take FA in a MM build on account of all the other talents that increase damage in more direct ways...I know hitcap is #1 but it still seems incredibly doable with a lot of the gear you can get even without FA. Are you sure?

3/3 FA or you're doinitrong
Even if you PuG or do 10 mans, taking a point out of imp. SS for Rapid Recuperation is better than taking a point out of FA.

Also exalted ring+T10 gloves+a few gems (orange hit/agi in yellow slots) = hitcap.
There's crit+ArP for every other slot, aside from neck. There it's ArP+Haste from Sindy25 heroic.

thanks for the info. I know the hit cap stuff and all that I was just wondering where ArP falls in stat priority. As for the FA thing I am already .6% over cap from gear alone so I dont need it. Of course as gear changes that will change to.

Armory?
Or which pieces of gear do you have that have hit on them, and what alternatives do you have for them?

The gear is a bit crazy right now since I stopped playing in the middle of Ulduar progression and have yet to even set foot in ToC. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pugging ToC10/25 for some gear certainly isn't a bad idea.
Especially if you can get a hold of two relics or whatever they're called so you can get ilevel 245 T9 (Or even better, get in a full clear ToGC25 and get 258 T9)
I'd advise getting T9 legs and gloves at ilevel 245 and helm/chest/shoulders T10.

T10 chest should be your priority, not only is 2pcT10 very good but the T10 chest also doesn't have hit and it has ArP.
T10 shoulders is also a piece without hit, or otherwise the 245 emblem shoulders are a good alternative without hit and with ArP.
Banner of Victory from ToC5 normal is another thing you want to try and get until you're lucky enough to pick up the whispering skull, sharpened scale, DWB or Death's Choice/Verdict.

I would also consider not showing off the nerubian penishelm Smiley: tongue

Staying Hitcapped gets harder as your gear level goes up. I'm sitting just at 8% with 3/3 FA, so yea, as Aethien said, it's necessary.

It's not that it's hard to stay hitcapped without FA, it's just that it leads to worse dps.
The itemvalue you free up by taking 3/3 FA and thus not having to get pieces with hit means that instead of hit you'll get either ArP or Crit on your gear.
And that crit and ArP is worh more dps than the dps you can get from talents as imp. HM.

Assuming you are hitcapped and have at least 50% crit, you should aim to get all gear with ArP on.

No, you always want crit/ArP gear. How much crit you have has nothing to do with whether you want ArP or not.

That kind of implies that you're choosing between crit/haste and ArP/haste, both of which are pretty unattractive due to the itemization "wasted" on the haste.
