My armory

There are two glaring mistakes that are going to be pointed out: enchants and the gems in my waist + legs. The reason they're gemmed for haste is because I recently got some advice to get my haste up in order for better dps. Initially I had the purified dreadstones in the blue spots, but changed them to add haste.

My rotation is fairly standard: arcane blast x 4, arcane missiles.

Yesterday in ICC10 I was barely pulling 3.5k dps for awhile. Then someone gave me a Flask of Frost Wyrm and my dps hovered around 4.1k the rest of the time.

So my question is, should I keep gemming for haste or switch back to the purified dreadstones? Also, now that my gear is up to par with my guilds progression I will start enchanting -- could that make up the difference of dps? Or perhaps there are some other glaring mistakes that I have missed.

okay a few things:

red gem slots are always runed
yellow will be reckless
blue will be purified

As long as you have 2pc T9 that works for that. Once you start gearing in T10 gear match sockets if the bonus is +7 spellpower or more. Otherwise gem runed cardinal rubies.

You should really be enchanting your gear. I generally look at it, if it is 232 or higher it needs an enchant and epic gems.

your gear choices weren't very good for playing arcane. You are about 250 points over the hit cap, the T10 legs are only good for fire spec (I hope you didn't spend frost badges on them) and the T9 chest was the worst itemized of the group (would have been better off buying Merlin's robes)

Your spec/glyphs seem fine

Your dps is incredibly low though, especially when the 25% buff is going on. My DK tank regularly pulls 3k on bosses in ICC (my mage does around 11-13k, but I am much more geared than you are).

What other classes are in your raids (I'm assuming you are only doing 10mans?)

Have you read the arcane thread that I made (linked from the sticky at the top)? It explains most everything here, including gemming, rotations, and cooldown usage -- when/how are you using your cooldowns?

Okay, easy enough to fix.

Sounds good. I'll get to enchanting asap. I dl'd Rawr so that's going to help a bit too.

I got those leggings as a drop in VoA, I believe as I haven't used frost badges yet. I have 93 frost badges at the moment, so I can get one of the 95 badge chest pieces. Do you recommend Meteor's Chaser Raiment? Why exactly are they only good for fire? When I got a chance at new loot, I looked at the stats and if they were all increased then I rolled.

As for the hit cap, I thought that was 446 and 17%? I read that in the Greatest mage post ever, but the math seems to be above my head.

I know it is really low, even with that buff (which I forgot to mention). In my group yesterday I am top 3, but as I said we are still progressing (reached Saurfang yesterday for the first time). I have been carried a couple times in ICC25, and in that group I did more dps because of more buffs, but was still very low on the chart.

The Arcane raiding tips thread? I generally pop the trinket, icy veins, arcane power whenever they're up. Heroism is usually popped around the same time during each boss so I can kind of figure when to save them.

There was something else I wanted to mention but forgot.

don't buy non-set pieces with your emblems, buy the T10 ones. Generally the helm and chest are the biggest initial upgrade, so the chest is probably the best bet (especially since you have a 264 helm atm). Keep trying VoA for the gloves, as the 2pc is fantastic (it changes up your 'rotation' to basically using AM whenever MBar procs to keep the haste buff going).

The reason why the legs are bad for arcane is because of the wasted itemization on hit. You need a raid-buffed 17% chance to hit. Take away 3% for a boomkin/spriest and another 6% for both arcane and frost talents and it leaves you with 8% required (7% if you are alliance with a draenei), which I believe is 208 (for 8%). Fire/TTW doesn't have the ability to get spellhit from talents so they need 14% (+3% from boomkin/spriest) to hit 17% chance to hit.

If they were a direct upgrade then stick with them, but it would have been a sad day for you to spend 95 frost emblems on the pants when they are the worst of the 5 for arcane.

Ahh, those charts make more sense now. Seems so much more obvious now.

Which VoA gloves are you talking about? And, do you have any AoE tips? I generally get out AoE'd by other mages. I usually just flamestrike the ground then blizzard

VoA drops both Tier10 gloves and pants for all of the tiers, so keep running 10 (for 251) and 25 (for 264) to see if you can get another piece.

For AoEing as arcane there isn't too much to it, as you said, alternating flamestrike + blizzard is a pretty easy way to get decent dps. If you wanted to go crazy you could do rank8 flamestrike->rank 9 flamestrike -> blizzard (repeat) as the two levels stack, but I generally don't waste the time with it.

The reason the other mages may outdps you is if they are fire and they living bomb things (max I've pulled is 40k on a trash pack) that live for longer than 12 seconds.
