Cataclysm speculation and discussion time go!

MMO-Champion stuffs

Notable things:
Stings are now Venoms, serpent sting is still sting and still a simple DoT.
Vemons are Widow: -25% healing debuff, Scorpid: 4% ArP stacks 3 times, Viper: +30% casting time.

Aspect of the Fox
83 - The hunter takes on the aspects of a fox, increasing your focus regeneration by 20% and allows you to Auto-shot while moving.
Instant, 1 sec cooldown.
Quick switching between Fox and Hawk for movement and standing still, potentially very interesting and fun.

Trap launcher > pay 30 focus to be able to shoot your trap. overwhelmingly lame and yet another extra ******* button for something that should have been built in a while ago.

Camouflage
85 - You camouflage, causing you and your Pet to blend into your surroundings. After 3 sec., you will enter a camouflaged state for 1 min, making you untargetable and providing stealth while stationary. While camouflaged, you and your pet's movement speed is reduced by 30%, but the damage done by your next attack is increased by 15%.
You can lay traps while under the effect, but any damage done by you or your pet will cancel the effect. Cannot be cast while in combat.
45 Focus, Instant, 1 min cooldown

WTF tooltip... does it break upon moving or does that keep me untargetable but visible?
And can't be cast in combat... Oh yeah ******* awesome... or not so much.

Quickly flipping through the talent trees:
BM, looks cool and has interesting stuff like Rhumba.
MM, feels empty and being forced to pick up crap talents to move on in the tree/get to useful stuff is terrible. (Looking at you "Resistance is Futile, you piece of ****) The fact that they ********** GftT doesn't help.
SV, doesn't feel much different.

Venoms look sexy. Being able to debuff and damage will be nice, and Viper sounds fun. Aspect of the Fox also looks neat, we'll see how it works out--I like that there are two 'good' Aspects, each set up well for a specific situation (moveing or not) instead of one good one and one crappy one.

I was hoping for some info on new pets, though. (And did anyone see that red and black crocolisk? WANT.)

If I wasn't so busy with SCII I'd be all over this :(

If any of you guys get/got into the beta and want someone to play with, let me know, but sadly everyone I could be playing with only wants to play Starcraft (not that that's a bad thing, but it's more unbalanced than WoW right now...).

I wish I could get in to test some of this stuff.

With trap launcher, and I going to have to like click trap launcher than pick the trap, or how is that supposed to work? Of course I should hope you are able to macro a trap to the trap launcher.

If camo can't be used in combat...then that's pretty much worthless, and from what I read by your tooltip is sounds very confusing indeed, you can lay traps...but if they do dmg does it break your camo? 1 min cd is decent I guess, but doesn't help hunters much in arenas.

I did play around with the hunter talents at wowtal.com, I don't know how accurate it is, some of the arrows led to nothing and I agree that MM forces you to get terrible talents just to be able to move down the tree.

Worgen - Kick *** Blood Hound dog (wolf I assume)

Horde:

Tauren - Them Strider bird things (Looks like an Emu to me)
Goblin - Crab
BE - Dragon Hawk

Heh, at least it was an easy one to guess! I probably wouldn't have thought crabs for goblins or boars for orcs.

Any info on what colors everything comes in for starters? Are they all the same or is it linked with character appearance?

Do I get stuck with a Pikachu if I show up late?

I would imagine it would be similar to the first of those mobs you come in contact with in the game.

Such as what the Dire Boar or something either the gray or the black one.
Probably the red raptor, forget the name for trolls.
The red dragonhawks I believe in eversong?

Would make sense to me.

I'm going to say this is true.

The Boar was black, the raptor was red/pink, dragon hawk was red.

I'll see if the color changes here later when I log on.

Just got home. When I played earlier all the pets stayed the same Skin color. No option to change their skin, and no option when customizing your toon changed their skin.

Just read on TKA that the starter pets aren't true pets.
They act like guardians until you can tame a real pet.

I think it fits thematically in that while you're a hunter you're only just training and need special training to learn to truly communicate with your companion.
Sort of like the difference between having a dog and having a trained police dog.

It also makes life a little easier for starting hunters.
Not having to control your pet and your character right from the start is an easier way of starting up.

Wait, Hunters have to control their pets?

So aggressive stance isn't enough?

I noticed that watching the Worgen starting zone video, I was just coming here to ask what level the pet controls would show up. xD

The Worgen pet at least seemed to enjoy running off and staying in combat... I hope they at least add follow and stay commands for levels 1-10, otherwise things could get a bit messy for lowbies.
#16 Jul 07 2010 at 9:58 AM Rating: Good
Yea they are more like guardians at 1st.

You attack..they rush forward and attack, you have no control. This was making me mad at first, as the first hunter I leveled was a BM. So I wanted to send my pet in 1st to get hate...

I asked in general: when you get to level 10 and can tame a pet, that is when you get the pet tool bar.

Not sure if I'm liking this new Rogue-like Energy for skills. I can see why they removed the need to buy ammunition, as you will be standing there auto-attacking waiting for Energy gain XD

Steady Shot regenerates Focus, right? When do you get Steady Shot in Cataclysm? If you don't get it until level 60 or w/e you get it now, I imagine leveling up a Hunter will be mind-numbingly boring.

Serpent Sting, Scorpid Venom, auto, auto, auto, auto, Arcane Shot, auto, etc.

Not sure if I like the idea of having my burst damage be restricted by the resource regeneration. It's what I'm facing now on my Druid, except I also have to activate three buffs/debuffs before I can do any real burst. My MM Hunter is leveling up by using Serpent Sting and Chimera Shot as a sort of one-shot combo. Thanks to heirlooms and me fighting low level mobs (because leveling up from 70 to 77 took me through Borean Tundra and, um, Borean Tundra), I rely on the mana restore from kills and the odd Rapid Fire to keep downtime at a minimum.

If I suddenly have to wait for Focus regeneration before I can use Chimera Shot, or Aimed Shot (2-second cast time, whaaa?), the burst would really go down the *******.

Can't find the new number, but I know they've moved Steady Shot WAY down in required levels.

Oh, there it is. MMO Champion puts it at Level 3.

Beats level 1-10 without a pet and 10-50 using pretty much nothing but acrane shot for PvE because everything else is way too mana inefficient.

It shouldn't be to bad. From what I've heard, they have not reevaluated our damage output from lvl 1-10 to include our pet, so we will be doing 135% damage compared to previously. Which should help out at til lvl 3, and even more so beyond. Now if we could only rez our pet if it dies before lvl 10, that would be more helpful : )

I can officially say the new Hunters are frickin' awesome. I was having so much fun testing it out on beta. I only tried BM, but I was really enjoying it. I'll check out MM and survival tomorrow.

[EDIT]

You get SS at level 3, Maz. And you get talents that make it really interesting. I mentioned this in my beta thread on the main page, but SSing twice in a row (which you'll do often) will spawn some snakes that attack the boss when he hits the tank (as BM) and also grant you haste. MM get different bonuses from using it and survival others.

It may be the "standard" attack for Hunters (with Cobra Shot), but it is sure as hell interesting. I'm loving the class.

Have you done any instances yet as a hunter and if so, how good or bad is it with movement.
So far from what I've heard on TKAsomething the judgement is very negative in that you can't ever stop spamming and if you move you lose steadies and thus most of your focus regen and you're fubared.

Edit: From what I saw in a video on youtube of a bossfight, there also isn't enough focus regen to use more than 1 special attack.
That hunter was MM and it was just Chimera > Steadyspam > repeat, and even then Chimera was often off cooldown well before he could use it.

Thats what I was afraid of when I was looking at the changes. I still think at least early on BM is going to be the way to go. Its the spec that seems to have the most focus regen talents and you dont have special shots like chimera or explosive to sap focus.

In a way, you are more like Mages now. Since you SS a lot, you will need to try and time your instant shots for times when you move.

However, they're is no reason you wouldn't have focus to perform ChS. It only costs 44 focus with talents. You regenerate 5 focus every second, so you'd have enough to use it every CD even if you hadn't SS at all. But using Steady Shot generates 10-15 focus, with talents. And you get a talent that makes Aimed Shot instant and free every 5 SSs.

So, I actually feel like MM are going to be using Arcane Shot to burn the extra focus off. And you'll definitely be using kill command, because it does a crap ton of damage for its cost. You won't start to feel starved until Kill Shot is up, but it costs half as much as everything else, so you'll just drop some shots for it.

So, I fully expect you'll be able to:

-ChS every 10 seconds
-Kill Shot every 6 seconds (after boss is <=20% health).
-Kill Command every 6 seconds.
-Insta-Aimed Shot every 10-15 seconds.
-Arcane Shot while moving or to burn off excess focus.

I mean, with my current haste Steady Shot is a 1.8 cast time and would give like 15 focus. I don't think you need to worry about it. Especially not when you can talent it so your pet gives you some. And SS has its cast time reduced by haste, so it just gets easier with time. If the fight keeps you moving NONSTOP, it might hurt. But the Fire Mages are going to be just as upset as you (and the boomkins more so).

I'll do a more in-depth investigation of MM later. I don't have the slightest clue how to play Survival, or I'd do that too.
