Tonight I tried a random dungeon and I am level 18. I only have 1 healing spell and I got creamed because the group wouldn't slow down so I could drink. Maybe I couldn't click their portrait fast enough to select them so I could heal them. Needless to say I got yelled at pretty bad and after I told them it was my first time healing they left.

I wasn't really specced to heal but I thought if I am doing a random just put healer and dps. My guild tells me I should stick to dps if I don't like healing, but I do, and I want to learn to be better. What are some things I should know, or tips. Also, in WSG it seems as though I just get bogged down and ganged up on, any advice there? And also, where can I find some decent healing gear for level 18?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Don't do it that way. Get yourself "Clique" which is a fantastic addon that'll make your life much easier. It allows you to assign spells and abilities to mouse+keystroke combos that you can then just use by hovering over the target that you want to heal and pressing/clicking whatever spell you want to use. This works exceptionally well with shamans since their ******* of heals is fairly limited.

For example, I have things set up so

Shift + Left Click = Lesser Healing Wave
Shift + Right Click = Chain Heal
Shift + Middle Click = Riptide

which is just about everything I ever need, with the rest being bound to Alt+Clicks. It doesn't get any faster or more convenient than that. To set things up, you just install the addon, which adds a tab to your spellbook, and then just perform your desired click/key combo while hovering over the ability in the spellbook.

Don't worry about gear while you're still in Azeroth. Most of it is fairly useless. Generally you want anything that has Intellect on it, with Spellpower not really being available until you're in the mid 50s or so. There will be a bunch of cloth items you can pick up at 30+ if you're running Scarlet Monastery, and you'll get more if you continue running those random dungeons.

Once in Outland, the very first quests will give you what you need. Don't waste gold for gear at the AH.

Most importantly: Accept those random groups for what they are. No matter what really happened, its always the tank's or healer's fault if things go wrong.

Is it possible to level by just doing random dungeons rather than solo questing? How much exp would you gain by doing that? I ran one today and I gained a level and a half but that was because I had rested xp. If it was mostly unrested could I still gain a level or so? Would I be missing out on anything important by not doing things like solo quests?

Queueing dungeons is the only way I am levelling from here on out.

I'll never have a Rogue, Mage, Hunter, or Warlock ever. EVER.

Absolutely, but it's losing in effectiveness with every level you climb up since more and more XP will be required each time. It comes in quite handy, though, when you find yourself getting tired of a certain area or if the common "Kill X of Y until you got Z" is getting on your nerves.

What I've been doing lately is to focus on the quest chains that eventually lead to the dungeons. Especially once in Northrend you have a couple quests attached to each dungeon, and their rewards perfectly match the parts and pieces you have dropping in them.

So instead of doing dungeons rather than quests, I'm doing quests WHILE being queued up.

The nice thing about doing quests is that turning them in will not use up your rested XP bonus, resulting in getting tons of XP from kills inside the dungeons.

The one thing with trying to heal at that level without being specced is that you will chew through your mana quickly. The real downside to speccing heals at 18 is that it will really limit how quickly you'll be able to level outside of dungeons. I leveled Enhance to ~70, then switched it up to Resto. After I got some better gear, I dropped Enhance entirely for Elemental. Big, BIG booms with good gear.

The one thing I really learned by soloing is what options I had available for those true "oh ****" moments. Nothing teaches you faster than experience, and it's better to learn something like that outside of a group setting.

There are a few add on's that will make your life easier. The above said "Clique" is one. A very common one used is Grid, and a lot of guilds will require you to have it. My personal favorite is Healbot Cont. Including the mouse+keyboard strokes, it will dispaly threat build (so that you can throw that heal on somone who is gaining threat) and mana supply (so you can save your mates with that Mana Tide totem. It will also display the time duration on Riptide and show the # of charges left on earthshield. It's kinda cool. Here is a youtube link on how to set it up. I suggest that you goto vid settings inside wow and change it to "play in window" mode and just hop back and forth. The fact you can pause the vid is nice too. At lvl 18 life sucks as healing, but at 20 you get the "bread and butter" Lesser Healing Wave. Look forward to it.

At lvl 19 you can drop 5 into Imprv Healing Wave, and then 5 into Tidal Focus. That should help you with your mana issues. Also grab all the MP5 gear you can find. Keep grabbing all the mp5 gear you can get. By the time you hit 70 you will never run out of mana. After mp5 get int (for your mana pool) and spirit to increase your mana regen even more. Don't always drop your totems. Heaing tot if the fight is going to last a while. Strength of Earth or Stoneskin are good if you have a lot of meele otherwise boss fights or long fights. You spend too much mana dropping them to move on.

It's possiable to lvl as Resto. You'll find that you depend on your totems a lot. Get a shield and mace. And yes it's possiable to lvl with just randoms. It gets about as old as find x of y to get z. A happy balance of the two is good. I usually run the idea of, 2x exp = randoms, no 2x exp quest. At 40 you can duel spec to Ele or Enhanc and quest faster. You should be holding onto the blues you get from the helpful goods bag from the random runs to gear out your main and "will be" secondary spec. That way life is smooth. Not sure about your server, but on mine DPS q wait time is ~18min where as healing is more like 5 min.

Hope I've helped.
