Demise of the pvp DK ???Follow

#1 May 03 2010 at 5:55 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all. I have a lvl80 DK but havnt played WoW in almost 9 months. I have returned to find almost no DKs pvping. I went into AV and i was the only DK for both sides !!!
I go to sk-gaming and have to drop down to #44 to find the first DK ?? According to SK gaming, DKs make up only ONE PERCENT off all arena contestants.

My question is what happened?? My DK was not my main but i enjoyed the hell outta him.
Is pvping even viable these days with a DK or do i have to roll a pally <cries at the thought>

Thx for your input

Well, to put it simple;

PvP since WOTLK hit follows this line of play:

Burst healing is overpowered, therefore to get a kill you need
A) ********* of Burst damage
or
B) ********* of CC

At the start of the expansion, either A or a combination of A and B were the ways to go. Some classes, like the Death Knight, had little to no CC and relied entirely on nuking their enemy down in seconds. Some classes, like the rogue, had plenty of CC *and* good burst damage and were able to use both to get a kill. Then Blizzard buffed resilience. And again. And again. And again. And in between, Blizzard nerfed burst damage from several classes (including the Death Knight) somewhat.

See where I'm going? Death Knights never had B, and A has been nerfed to the ground, baby. Which leaves us to be, say, the mosquito among the killer bees. We sting, but we don't hurt. We've more or less lost our place in competitive arena because we have no way to kill somebody before his healer can save his ***, and we do not have any CC to lock down the healer long enough to actually kill our target.

That said, I realize this sounds a little bit melodramatic. While it's the cause for DK's being absent from the high-ranking arena ladders, that doesn't make them "sub-par in PvP" as a whole. You can still achieve decent ratings with them and the class isn't so underpowered that you can't make a difference in battlegrounds. If you really plan on getting a serious 2K+ rating, you're probably better off rerolling. If you just want to do some semi-casual PvP, you're still cool with Death Knights. We can still hold our own in BG's and Cataclysm will come soon enough and change everything.

OK. but i cant understand the raise then of shamans and the decline of druids. Druids have healing touch, much better cc then shamans unless you are a fanatic over earthbind totems, the ability to stealth, best buffs in the game. Back in the day, if my partner was a druid, i didnt lose a 2x2.

Resil getting buffed confuses me when it comes to warlocks. warlock dps is all magic based and therefor subject to resil checks more then a DK would be. If my trinkets werent on cooldown, i could have taken down almost any equally skilled warlock
( WoTF rules )

Why will DK pvpers thrive better in the new expansion ? Maybe i should gear my DK up in anticipation

BTW, thx for the detailed reply

DKs at higher levels were just icy chains spammers, it's about all you did. As Moz said, we don't have enough burst to kill stuff, and don't have enough CC to keep someone completely tied down. Sure there are some really good PvP DKs out there, but the top PvPers seem to have moved on and play other classes.

Doesn't bother me though, I'm a PvE DK.

Shamans have received a massive PvP buff a couple of patches back, though. And after they've been the underdog for literally 2,5 game long, I'm not surprised to see people are actually playing the class now that they can. Druids are still 'alright', but the thing is that most of their kiting abilities are useless as you spend most of your high-ranked arena game sitting in treeform soaking the damage. You can still kite, but it's risky and you're more likely to die if you spend a few seconds in travel form than if you just stand there and HoT through the CC.

How do you figure that one out? You might simply be confused regarding the current state of resilience; it simply decreases all damage done by other players and their pets to you, all damage done by crits dealt to you, and it decreases the chance for enemy players to crit you. The "less damage from DoTs" component is completely gone.

Because everything will change. The main thing that might bring DKs into the game is the fact that healers will be able to run out of mana again. Which means classes like rogues and mages with burst ánd a lot of CC will still be king of the hill, but at least you'll be able to DPS down an enemy or at least run their healer down while doing so. That, and we'll get a few additional tools to work with (a watered-down version of 'Spell Reflect' seemingly our new main PvP tool). That said, there is absolutely no predicting yet as to how Death Knights will work, and these are just guesses that seem logical to me. We have to wait and see for actual Cataclysm gameplay before we'll know how this plays out.

Rememeber that health pools are going to be WAY higher than they are now, relatively*, so burst is going to be less important. Not UNimportant, no. But less so--sustained damage will have higher value at least.

*meaning that if we considered it as a linear increase from 80 to 85, the pools at 85 will be much higher than we'd expect them to be.

Let us not forget that the novelty has worn off the class.

Soon my friends, there will be 10,000 Blood Elf warriors sitting in LFG just waiting to claim the FOTM title from our beloved DKs.

I also predict a new term bursting onto the scene: BEWtard.

Yeah, you can see that trend everywhere--fewer DKs in PvP and in PvE. It's actually becoming fairly rare to get a DK in my random groups. Even tanks are rare--I see way more Pallies and Warriors than DK tanks.

Dk has foregone the role of burst in S5/S6 and moved to the role of support. You set up kills as a dk. There are some problematic classes against a dk in pvp healers being the worst mainly Paladin > Druid > Shaman > Priest. But if played right DK is still a great great class.

I actually am glad that I see less and less dks now that I pvp on mine quite a bit.

I will say this though, DK's are very underestimated in a 3's and 5's environment. Pestilence is a nightmare for non disease dispel healers. They can literally shut down a healer for about 10 seconds with cds which isnt much but its definately enough to shift the momentum in the game. Also with people playing subfrost with HBryn, T2 or even Shadowmourne the possibility of burst is still very viable.

There is nothing scarier than a dk in UP with gloves popped, IT up and gargoyle just waiting to come out. 1.2 garg casts are scary as hell.

Well, this friday starts av weekend. I will probably run my dk all weekend. Which classes now are the easiest for a dk to solo? Warrior? Rogue? Back in the day, shamans were the easiest for me to take down quickly

Anything that can Heal themselves is hard to take down alone. I dueled a Priest the other day, it took me around 5min to beat her.
The only reason I won is because she finally ran out of MP to heal herself.
At one point I think she got bored too, and decided to try and Fear me (the scream they do) and run the other day so that way I would be out of Duel range and be forced to give up. I was getting bored, but I figured I'd see it through to the end.

If you are running as an Unholy DK in PvP, make sure you have your pet's attack macro-ed or Tied with another action (mine attack w/e I drop an IT on). When a Rogue pops up behind you, your ghoul could stun them for 3sec. Enough for you to break CC and turn around and start hitting them.

I'm now having a hard time with Mages.

I was going to make a new thread, but hopefully this gets read in here.

Anyone do Arena with their DK? Can you share your spec?
I'm pretty much at my cap on PvP gear, the only way to get better gear is to use Frost Emblems (so not going to) or do Arena.
I did 8 games last night, only won 1 (was a 2s team).

Or anyone care to pick at my PvP spec? Its in my Sig, the Unholy Spec is my PvP spec (and I should be in PvP gear. i don't do much PvE stuff anymore)

I haven't done Arena on my DK in a bit, but I used to play blood with a paladin healer, which worked pretty decently when we did it. We never played too intensively, but got to 1100 rating with something like 17 wins and 3 losses. I wouldn't recommend it for hardcore competitive arena, but it's quite fun if you get the gear and all. If you want to go blood, you've basically got three spec options; option 1 focuses on burst and isn't horrible against mages, option 2 is worse vs mages but better for random BGing otherwise and also slightly more effective against rogues, and option 3 gives up Dancing Rune Weapon for the new Unholy Blight - it is probably the more effective one for pure arenaing. Regardless of your spec, you're going to need 5% hit, around 600-700 resilience and waste the rest of your itemization/gems on armor penetration. You might want some spell penetration too. I've played all three options myself and am currently using option 1.

If you don't want to go blood...

You can probably drop the points in Scent of Blood for points in Dark Conviction. This also frees you up a point to throw in Blood-Caked Blade, Dirge or Wandering Plague (if you intend to do 3s). Get rid of Anticipation and get Virulence and Vicious Strikes. Also, drop Improved Unholy Presence for even more points. In the end your spec can look something like this, assuming you don't want to dump those other points into frost.

Good luck =)

When i want to look up pvp builds, i go to http://www.sk-gaming.com/arena/ for the builds of the current arena leaders. Not only can you see talent choices, but also rune and profession choices
#15 Jul 27 2010 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
I'm currently running as:

http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Turalyon&cn=Poked&group=1

Currently I mainly play 2's, and I agree with everyone who feel abit underdoggy in that bracket, due to the low amount of burst we have.

But as someone said setting up the kill is the only way to win, you can't tunnel as much as a DK as a Warrior can, your overall pressure is just not high enough, you need to use all your CD's on someone who ain't HoT'ed up, and such to get some pressure out.

I think one talent that most DK's forget about is Corpse Explosion - It is really the best burst DK's have, and while it is pretty buggy, and you need to time it rather well for it to do anything it's really a good ability (To use on your pet if anyone is confused)

In 3's DK's are pretty strong, the role we play is slightly boring if you compare us to the Haste/ArP machines out there, who can burst people down in no time.

PHD, DKLD and TSG are all pretty strong combos, but to be succesful you do need to run one of these, so the choices are not many, and you can't really spec Blood or Frost and the choices change - At higher rating Unholy is really the only viable spec to play.
