Another DK tank asking for help.Follow

#1 Apr 27 2010 at 6:54 PM Rating: Decent
I have been playing WoW for a short while and have found that I only enjoy doing two things, Tanking and healing. When I got my priest to 55 I didn't wanna wait to go to outlands so i made a Dk. When I hit outlands I began tanking with my Dk and had no trouble. When I reached Northrend however, I became a very ineffective tank. My hp dropped to fast the healers couldn't keep up. I am here just asking for help. My Rotation is D&D IT PS PEST BB then Runic power dump and repeat. In frost presence I have around 16k in a group and solo 14k health as well as about 15k armor but my health drops way too fast. My armory page is http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Scilla&cn=Ranisai (unholy spec is dps for me). Please feel free to give tips and remember a full spec change is not out of the question but also keep in mind that I am not 80 but 72.

Other than that you may be trying to take on too many mobs at once, I don't know what to tell you. :/

Are you using tank cooldowns? Do you have defense gear?

Realistically, he should be fine right now for level-appropriate Regs. He has 417 Defense, which is -2.28% crit. At 72, the LFD feature can put you into AN, and Anub is a level 74 elite. That means he only has a 3.12% chance to be hit by a critical from the boss (Anub being two levels higher would have a chance to deal a crit of 5.4%. That shouldn't be noticeable at that level. Even Pound only does 10K damage at that level. With his 40% reduction OUTSIDE FP, he could still survive a crit from it.

I think your healers may just be lazy. I had one complaining today that our Tank in Gnomer was taking too much damage. The Pally in question was actually specced to tank, wearing BoA gear, and had an up-to-date shield/armor. The Healer was specced as a Feral Druid.

These things are relative. The OP has a 5/5/5 build, and that's already more than is necessary to tank a normal instance.

I had healed as Disc priest at the level 70 range.
And I dare say, healing DK tanks = painful.
They take a ton of damage and I had to drink frequently.

In one of the runs, the tank left after Emo-ing over some issues, and we got a replacement warrior tank of same level. My life became soooo much easier.

I suspect there something wrong with the gear/damage mitigation around that level for DKs.

Having no shield, you can only rely on armor and dodge/parry. I suspect the amount of armor you get at those levels is insufficient. So if you are tanking more than 1 mob (people expect AOE these days), you hp will drop like a rock.

If possible, try to reduce the number of mobs u tank at one go (if you can convince people to use CC :P)

Step 1: Go to the AH

Step 2: Buy the Cobalt "set"

Step 3: ...

Step 4: Profit

Step 5: Repeat at 75 with the Saronite stuff.

Edit: I would also respec. This is similar to what I used to Blood tank in that level range.

So essentially, I "should" be doing fine? From what I gather, my guess is that most healers are just whining about it. I also know my limits when it comes to mobs but I do admit occasionally I do pull too many and that's usually when everyone starts whining.

I have seen this problem from both sides andmostly both sides are correct. I have an 80 2h Frost tank and a 76 tree. When healinga DK they start out taking damage quickly so I cast a regrowth 1st thing. Then with a bloom stack and healing normally they are no different. I would prefer any other class, but if they know how to use their skills, its cool.
As a tank I am poor, both from lack of knowledge and low gear. I find that tanking is much harder than healing, or maybe it just takes longer to learn. If you enjoy it and stick with it, you should do fine. You made a good start by coming here. I would also suggest Tankspot, as they have excellent DK info.

You should be fine, but if you do what Therion says, you might be doing even better(at least from a healer's standpoint). To take it even further, you could really use some enchants or armor kits. Sure, most armor kits only give you stamina, but that's more you'll heal yourself from a death strike/rune tap, which makes life even easier on the healer when you think about it.

That said, the easiest solution to your problem is to not overpull, which you recognize as a failing of yours.
