Shammy vs. Priest for PvP/healingFollow

#1 Apr 19 2010 at 5:49 AM Rating: Decent
I'm making a new character, and I'm looking for a healer. I've tried Druids and failed at them (I never played them, they bored me)so now I'm considering a Shaman or a Priest. Before I commit to one or the other, however, I want to know who's stronger for healing, and PvP. I have gold for a dual talent spec.

This was an interesting though old subject/thread, up to the third sentence.

The answer is neither.

All classes can perform as a healer. If you didn't like the druid (heal over time based), maybe you should try a paladin for mostly direct heals, which is the most diametrically opposite kind of healer to a druid. Personally, I really enjoy my tree healer, as rejuvenation, regrowth and wild growth heal over time spells suits my play style.

Try level all four healing classes up to lvl 25-30 and heal with them in dungeons, and make your decision based on your experiences. They all get more and stronger spells later, but it will give you an indication of differences.

Maybe you should check out the "Bored Druid Thread" in the Druid forums?

Another different play style is the disc priest. We have fast shields that can be applied before damage, to keep everyone's health at a higher level overall. We also have Penance, which is fast and hard hitting, as well as a lot of other spells to handle a variety of situations. If you look at both heals and absorbs with a meter like skada, you can see how beneficial we are to the raid. Our proactive style meshes well with other healers, who can top the players off easier because we minimized the damage.

All healers can be fun and effective. It's a matter of finding the style that you really like.

if i was going to do another healer for battlegrounds i would still go for the disc preist. i started out as shadow and leveled him for awhile like that but he was just like my lock so i respect him disc. he just blows away the shamans, gets beat by few druids. their are certain bgs that are better for healers than others i have found also. av, warsong are the ones i like the best. i flash heal the heck out of guys, toss alot of refreshes, buble guys left and right. i also tab threw until i get a attacking player then target my guy shield him and penance, go back and flash heal the guys around then penance him again if he needs it. been leveling him sinse level 20 in pvp only and he is sitting at 68 right now with alot of lower 60 gear and i am topping the bgs that i am in. just got to move, buble yourself when getting attacked fear when your in the crap and run and heal.

if you want to check him out in the armory look up iamenchantin
jusy got over 15000 lifetime kills on this guy, it fun to heal in the bgs

Priests, specifically disc are more proactive than shamans although less so than druids I think.
I'd rate them like this:

Proactive ------------------------------------------------ Reactive
Resto Druid - Disc Priest - Holy Priest/Resto Shaman - Holy Paladin

Depending on what you prefer you can pick the class(/spec) further to the left or right to fit your healing preferences.
Personally I really prefer healing with my disc priest over my resto shaman, and I haven't really tried holy priest or resto druid.
And I don't have a paladin but I highly doubt I'll enjoy healing with a paladin anyway, I'm an incredibly paranoid healer who always wants everyone topped off all the time and shields and PoM combined with Penance and flash heals allows me to do that very well without losing efficiency.
