Question about PvPFollow

#1 Apr 12 2010 at 1:40 PM Rating: Default
A friend of mine plays a warrior, and he wont shut up about how good prot spec is in pvp. So I have been wondering if prot pallys are any good in pvp? I have a low lvl prot pally that I want to dust off, but before I buy his heirloom weapon I wanted to see what you guys thought about it. If it doesnt seem like pally prot is capable of doing good in battlegrounds, then Ill just go ret and stop bugging you guys with these questions.

Thanks in advance for your info

Hm, how to do this..

Prot paladins have more PvP utility than ret paladins. They have the only silence and slow available to the class, the only talent that buffs Divine Shield, the largest damage reduction and stamina increase talents, and the best AoE damage.

They have Blessing of Sanctuary and undispellable Divine Plea, but with their tiny mana pool, they need someone attacking them to really keep their mana up. The lack of Divine Purpose and Repentance makes them even more easily kitable than Ret, especially with the tiny mana pool preventing Cleanse spam.

Ret paladins have more single-target DPS and better burst. They have MUCH better mana regen, especially when attacking casters and healers. They can remove stuns from themselves or party members on a reasonably short CD; one that also doesn't apply Forbearance. And they have Art of War. Instant-cast self heals are extremely useful in PvP.

Ret paladins lack the Shield of the Templar silence, and are stuck with Hammer of Justice and Repentance as their only ways to interrupt casters. Seal of Justice is too random and too large a DPS decrease. Killing a healer is tough as either spec, though.

Either do well in BGs. I don't think the difference between them is very large, though, so I suggest you try it both ways. I'd say there's far more difference between Prot and Arms warrior than Prot and Ret paladin.

You mentioned buying heirloom gear, so... go Ret. You really need to have alot of talent points invested to make Prot useful in pvp.

You put on ret strength gear and spec full prot with a few changes over the traditional tanking spec. Like taking fear and disorient reduction, stoicism etc.

Armory me to see the general talent spec and gear choices. I have 4 pc relentless and one piece of wrathful armor, item level 251 one-hander and shield and some nice trinkets etc. Prot is simply better than ret at the moment, that's the simple truth. The spec does better burst damage, takes much less damage (no matter what, if you happen to be facing a melee opponent or hunter you're practically immortal) and can set up ridiculous cc chains on healers. I duelled a holy paladin who was boasting about being unkillable outside org earlier, killed him in roughly 8 seconds.

You do have to be careful about running out of mana, you can't simply spam abilities like ret and stay at a high mana level. You need to lazily attack an opponent until someone blows a trinket at which point you switch to them and pop wings, hammer of justice > avengers shield > arcane torrent > (your partner's best cc or disrupt). You also can't heal yourself as you need divine plea up constantly to maintain mana. Sealing and judging light will return more health than some healers i've played with however especially with my reckoning based build.

Thanks for the replys. I think Ill start picking up some gear and getting his lvls up. Im glad to see prot is doing good, I really didnt want to be ret. Ill buy the heirloom gear for him, but I think Im gonna stay prot. It may suck at first, but I figure its the only way I can get a true feel for the class and tweak the spec to suit my playstyle. Thanks again for the info. I probably would have tried this anyway, I just really wanted someone to tell me I wasnt wasting time.

Prot levels just fine, though until you get holy shield it wont feel very iconic. Just make sure to avoid talents that affect abilites you wont have for 60 levels (respec when you hit 70, 75 or whatever). You can get decent xp by doing instances too, and since you are queueing as a tank the wait times should be very short.

Prot is decent enough in low level pvp for flag running and harassing casters. When you get the 1-handed weapon specialization talent you'll do pretty impressive damage too. The heirloom sword or mace will make a big dent in pretty much anything and you wont go down quickly with holy shield up and judgement of light on someone in range.

About the mace, doesnt it have agi? I thought as a pally str would be the stat of choice. Or is the mace still a good choice for the other stats on it?

I looked at the sword and mace again, and saw that theres no str on the sword. It has slightly more ap and crit. Im going to go with the mace. I think the extra armor dodge and crit from the agi will outweigh the slight difference in ap and crit. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong.

As for enchants, is the best enchant still crusader?
