HoR crit me my tank specFollow

#1 Mar 30 2010 at 7:41 AM Rating: Decent
So I made my DK to dps, I just picked up tanking gear along the way. Hit ulduar did a lot of tanking, retired tank set for ToC, then picked it back up for ICC. So yesterday I tried tanking HoR, and I was able to keep aggro on everything (even with dps all doing a different target) but the healer was oom by the 3rd wave and ended up getting me vote kicked from the group (first time it's happened). Anyway I've come to the conclusion I'm not meant to tank so I've switched my second spec to DW frost. =(

it is regretable that this does happen. since being able to do cross server randoms, everyone is into speeding through everything. i myself have had problems with this as a tank also having everyone attacking everything in hor. but if everyone agrees to a certain kill order i.e. prist, mage, mercenary, footman, and rifleman i rarely have any problems. and my tanking is not all that great (gs 4899) and my dps is (gs 5099). i am also a frost spec tank/dps. not sure what ur running as a tank spec but i found that as frost im able to hold agro better.

hope this helps

What are your stats in your tank set, and which spec are you?

I tanked HoR this last weekend with little problems. We only wiped once at the end when the healer wasn't paying attention and fell off the cliff. I am deep frost and found that DnD, HB and BB did good holding the packs on me and the healer didn't seem to strain much. I am no where near the gear you have.

My problem is in PoS, I can't take all the hits from the two mages and 4 melee skellies as you climb up the hill. I get hit twice and go down.

Check my sig for my armory.

The only thing I can figure is that your Priest just sucked and probably wasn't dispelling crap (HoR becomes WAY easier if you can get rid of all your debuffs fast, because they all hit fairly hard--I prioritize decursing over DpS on my Mage).

Dilbrt, I'd bet that if you went into H HoR with a decent group that knew how to single target down the adds you'd have been fine. Those pulls are hellish if DPS is spread all over the place, because of the synergy between the different mob damage types (and the fact that healers will keep them up forever if not burned down).

I'd say go in with some friends and see how it goes - my guess is with the stats you just rattled off you won't have a whole lot of trouble.

HoR really requires good tanks/healers, and decent DpS. There is really no way for anyone to be carried, besides maybe 1 DpS if the other 2 are really good. An Awesome tank with a so-so Healer will still find themselves wiping often. A crap healer and you'll be lucky to make it past 1 wave.

Mana users also need to pay strict attention to when they drop combat--they must start drinking, because it may only last a second or so before they are back in. But if you start, you can continue until you have to start healing/DpSing or you get hit. You can do this 3-4 times, which will hopefully be enough for you to stretch out your mana so you have some for the boss.

Refreshment is also a HUGE help here--pray for a Ret Pally.

Most heroic healers have been trained, at this point, to not even pay attention to their mana. As a result, any time when longevity actually matters, they don't know what to do.

For HoR, I think it's quite easy for DKs to tank it since we have DnD. So holding threat shouldn't be an issue.

Most of the time, how well the run goes is very dependent on the skill of the DPS. If they are bad (mobs die slowly or they take too much damange), healer go OOM in no time.

I've been in groups who actually interrupts the casters (I dont understand why it's so difficult for DPS to do that) and focus on the skull (I do mark) and the packs die fast. But I've also been in groups who are like headless chickens and we get nowhere.

Another problem is the 1st boss. For some reason, a lot of healers seems to have a hard time keeping everybody up beyond the 3rd fear. If the boss is not down by then, very likely many will die and it'll be a wipe.

Just as a quick question about tanking/dps'ing in Heroic HoR as a DK. On that first boss that fears, I try to time my AMS to avoid as many of those fears as I can, but sometimes when I -think- he is going to cast it,he doesn't and the 5 second window of immunity is gone. What cue do I need to be looking for to cast AMS right before he casts fear?

Well you guys may have been right it may not have been my fault, but I'm honestly much happier having 2 dps specs anyway. It lets me have a frost spec for the LK, which rocks.
