Boomkin ThreatFollow

#1 Mar 08 2010 at 11:44 AM Rating: Good
I think I'm missing something with this whole boomkin thing. I just recently started leveling up my boomkin/healer druid (currently 76), and find that I tend to pull a lot of threat. This is even when I'm not AoEing, or waiting a minute for the tank to get aggro.

Is there any threat dumping abilities that I'm missing that I should use? Or should I just pretty much melee my way through dungeons (obvious joke)?

Also, as I'm still searching through these threads and reading up on EJ, as I'm getting closer to 80, I feel as though I should probably start focusing on gearing a certain way. I've practically have been grabbing whatever I could that had SP on it (no matter if it'd be better for healing or boom). And the gear I have is what I use for both specs.

Obviously, I'm using the staff, shoulders and chestpiece right now for the xp gain. Currently sitting on about 26 emblems of triumphs which would make it easy for me to at least pick up one or so Tier pieces once I hit 80 (depending on how long I take my time to get there). I'm also planning on running the ICC Reg 5 mans once I get to the minimum level (going to try to get my own group together as to not get "shunned" by pugs due to my low level).

I know I will need a lot more hit (I think I'm only in the double digits, so it's bad). But at my level, I'm not doing too horribly in dungeons dps wise (VH, DTK, etc). I can usually pull around 1500 dps (to my surprise I saw over 2500 the other day in VH... then again I was AoEing lol).

Anywho, I guess the main point of this post is: Are there any threat dumping abilities that I should use other than waiting for a while for the tank to get aggro? And... HALP meh figur mai gearz!

(At least until I finish up reading on the sticky and the EJ thread)

If you're finding yourself threat capped, consider speccing into Nature's Reach for a 30% threat reduction. Also, make sure you're always standing at range so you will pull hate at 130% threat instead of 110% threat.

Outside of that, a Hunter or Rogue could make your life a little easier if they know how to MD/tricks onto the tank.

Well I figured out what (or at least how) I should be gearing myself as I close in on 80 reading EJs Moonkin thread. So that's pretty much answered.

And thanks tab... I didn't even think about the talent part. Heck, I even thought I did spec into it! Shows how much I'm paying attention. Thanks!

Because of you, Arex, I love my boomkin. =P

Seeing so many crits makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

I managed to finally get a hit ring from the one quest for Gundrak, last night. Still running random dungeons to get more triumphs. I'm thinking of getting the idol as my first purchase (as I seriously haven't had an idol AT ALL on her.... Didn't do those quests in Outland to get one since I flew through there).

Plus the fact that since it's so easy to get triumphs at 80, I'm sure I can easily get my T9 quickly.

With the bonus badges from the random heroics you average about 5 triumph emblems per heroic. You need 160 to get 4pcT9 - 32 heroics - can easily be done in a few days. I'm doing the daily for frost badges on the 5 toons I have with 4pcT9 and working on my Shammy now. It really is amazingly quick to get some decent gear.

Unfortunately, you still need to do ToC to get good enough gear to hit up Icecrown.

T9 is fun, there is no doubt.

I'm starting to get back into boomkin, but for the most part I'm staying resto in raids. I will say this though, since i transfer/faction changed I kinda do miss my instant threat drop button. Shadowmeld is actually a pretty sweet ability.

I've found it doesn't work for me. Not sure if it's just being glitchy or what. But a mob's heading toward me, I shadowmeld and they still continue to beat the crap out of me. By then, I usually hit barkskin and try to burn them down (if the tank hasn't picked them back up by then).

And I know I don't have any dots or bleeds on me, so that can't be why they see right through it.

I mean, I can understand if I'm running something like ICC where the mobs are significantly higher in level than me, but my own level mobs still see through the shadowmeld.

Shadowmeld is one of those quirky little abilities. It seems to get resisted a lot. I'll also wait to long to use it; click it but the mob will already be swinging or something, so it'll pop me right back out. :S

Then again Saurfang didn't see through it last night, and I survived a wipe.

It's still awesome when used with flight form. ;-)

So it's pretty much like the whole vanish issue with rogues that they say they fix but it really isn't. lol

haha, ya.

Add in the fact you can't usually afford to stand in shadowmeld for an eternity waiting for a tank to reacquire aggro either; makes it a big unwieldy in encounters at times. Another idea is to pop Nature's Grasp instead for little adds and stuff. At least it'll root the baddie until someone actually hits the mob. Bonus is you can keep doing stuff while the target is rooted.

But i dunno, guess that doesn't help if your awesome crits get you the attention of everyone's main target. Typhoon to knock them back to the tank perhaps? :S

Yeah, I have an issue remembering Nature's Grasp, and I'm sure that usually would give the tank time to see the mob and pick it up. I just need to remember more, that's all.

But I'm definitely liking boomkin a lot right now. Was in DtK last night (a little bit before hitting 77) and pulled over 3k dps on Trollgore =).

Seeing my dps the way it is now makes me wonder even more how an 80 can do sub-1k dps. Oh well...

They're bad. Really. I don't even bother to call them out on it in /p, but that's pretty much the only explanation.

We've had a shake up in our guild recently and most of our geared tanks are now MIA. The new guys stepping up aren't quite as geared and it is making things a little more interesting for me. Up until now, I could pop beserk at the beginning of the fight and not even think about threat after the first few seconds. In out 10man the other night I actually had to back up out of range to drop a little threat even after getting a salve from the Pally tank. It didn't help that our rogue was tricksing me every time. He is having to get used to looking at the threat meter to see if he should tricks a DPS or a tank now.

It certainly makes fights more interesting when you have to watch threat as well. I like it!

The other day, my level 73 pally alt did 3K dps on the second boss in UK normal. Now I know there's some AOE involved because there's actually 2 bosses... but still. Single target, on a dungeon boss, my pally pulls around 1,2 - 1,5K dps at minimum... at level 73. I too wonder how level 80 chars can do sub-1K dps :P

As far as Boomkins are concerned: I even took a point out of our threat reduction talent, and I still don't have any problems, so I guess it might be a tank problem with you. Just make sure you don't expect anyting crazy from your tanks. If they have to move a boss around a bit (the worms from NB in TOC/TOGC come to mind), they can't hold aggro as well, as when standing still. As long as you keep those situational occurences in mind, you should be fine. (also, with tanks you don't have any experience with, always count to 3 before dpsing... really slowly :P)

Dual-boss fights, to be fair, are pretty much ideal Ret Paladin targets. You hit one and both get hit with Seal of Command. But yeah, sub-1k in heroics is just bad. You only need like 60 hit rating or so to cap on bosses in there, so it shouldn't be misses that do it. I believe my Shaman broke 2k at level 78.

Which makes me wonder what kind of DPS people were seeing in raids back in the days of early WotLK.

From WoWWiki:

...it is simply a test of killing Patchwerk before his berserk timer and keeping the tanks alive. You will need 36,111 raid DPS to do this.
Early runs had 3 tanks, 6 healers and 16 dps. I recall people getting kicked for doing less than 2k dps...

Back in BiS t7 gear I was pushing 5k dps on patchwerk. Of course this was when haste was still amazing for balance druids and eclipse sucked more **** than your back alley hookers.
