Figured we can have a new UI thread for mages, haven't had one for a while. Mine is still in progress a bit, but here is the basics:

Why are AB and AM 3/4? Did you bind your movement to esdf?

nope still WSAD, I guess I got used to that from leveling and playing fire where 1. Wand 2. Fireball 3. Scorch (used to stacking things with 3 I guess) and 4. Fireblast or Icelance when frost (guess I'm used to using procs on 4), although my (instant) pyro is shift+2 I believe.

Here is mine, done some minor tweeks since this photo, but essentially the same. I use a G-15 Keyboard so a lot bound to the G keys. Key bindings are show, with exception of the right side which are mouse click keys or bound to mouse. Target debuffs show the same as my buffs on the left but on the right. Also a hud comes up when engaged in combat. Mage procs display on the left next to my hud to allow very quick response to them. Combat window in lower left is the Skada threat and DPS display.

I'll share: http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5124/mageuic.jpg
And in combat: http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/4356/mageuicombat.jpg
The red flame tracks Living Bomb on the target and the yellow glow is for Improved Scorch.

I'll try to post my UI at some point, but I have to ask... do you actually use your wand often? I can think of a couple situations it would be useful, but not keybound to 1 useful. Should I be using it all the time?

My UI

It's still a work in progress, I'd like to get the buff/debuff region, party frames and chat frame cleaned up.

So far the UI mods I like (that I've tried) are PowerAuras, Grid and Bartender.

I really like Mozared's. I play on a laptop and don't think I have the screen real estate to pull off some of the more involved UIs. Sometimes I don't think I have the screen real estate to pull off my UI.

Could some of you guys list some of the UI addons or tricks (for something like X-perl) you're using ?

Well, to clean up your UI you don't need a huge screen. If you learn your hotkeys well, you can hide your hotkey bars. You can put your minimenu on "fade out until mouseover". You could use prat to make your chat frame look like mine by hiding the buttons (and then putting it into the corner). You can remove your party interface if you're using grid.

You can also reduce the size of them. As long as you aren't planning to click, this allows you to have a marker if you want it (such as for abilities that are bound, but rarely used, or for CDs if you don't want to use an addon, though I suggest you do).

Plus, there are things you just don't need. For instance, you *really* don't need your damage chat box. Just make it a tab on your normal one, so it is hidden unless you specifically want to check something.

Furthermore, there's really no reason for character portraits if you can live without them. They don't give you any info, just cause an FpS drop in rendering and take up needless space. Since you aren't healing, you can significantly reduce any unit frames you intend to use as well. I personally don't like having none of them (I like to know when people die, and you need them if you intend to decurse).

But, even then, you can limit that info. Name, class, health and that's it. You have no reason to see other people's mana, because you can't do anything about it (and aren't responsible for group pacing). I suggest you include, however, something that shows who is what for random groups.

Your minimap can be reduced in size, if you don't mind it. You can also reduce clutter around it by using something like Fubar. That way, there doesn't need to be 6 billion icons around it.

Now, instead of your massive portrait (and the target's) you can make them smaller. And, centering them under your feet means you don't need to take your eyes off of combat to find out info you need.

Now, as you don't need to see recount data during combat, it doesn't need to be visible. Though, if you still want it to be available, you can just make it much smaller (and hopefully somewhat translucent). Omen is more relevant, but that can also be kept small, and configured to only show the top X number of players on threat.

You'd be surprised how such limited changes can help.

Oh yeah. And, remember with key binds, if you are going to bind 1-=, shift+1-= and ctrl+1-=, that you can just create macros to do it and only use one bar.

Meaning, instead of displaying 3, you can just show 1-=. By using modifiers and making each key a macro rather than a straight ability, you can get 3x the abilities with only 1 bar visible at any one time.

[EDIT]

Also, there's no reason to see EVERY buff and debuff. Configure it to show only those that you can cast/remove (or need to know about for some other reason, like heroism) and be done with it. If you do it right, you can place all these others into a mouse-over box (or drop-down one) so you can still check to make sure you have X buff if you want.

do you really play at 1024x768 or is that a resized image? that is such a low resolution that I can't imagine anyone to play at unless your computer is awful. (I personally run at 1920x1200 on my 24'' screen mmmmm).

Yes. It's, uh, complicated as to why I don't use a computer that will run raids at a higher res... but the trade off I've made for this situation is worth it.
; )

EDIT:

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I never considered stuff like just removing character portraits, but you're right, I don't need them.

If you like having that much of your screen taken up by that bottom bar I really recommend installing an addon like aperture that moves the bottom part of 'viewable' screen to the top of that section. Right now it is worthless space that you can't see if something is there.

Actually, there are a couple of possible alternatives to Aperture - you want to look up viewport(s). For example, you may want to check out Sunn Viewport Art or Viewporter.

How do you get the target icons to show up in the lower bar?

It is actually just an addon called raidmobmarker (I believe) that makes marking mobs/people easier than using keybinds or the right-click menu. Unfortunately it can't target things with those icons, that would be awesome :-(
