Leveling as Prot spec questionsFollow

#1 Feb 15 2010 at 12:26 AM Rating: Decent
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to warriors, and I was really interested in leveling up as a prot spec. because it looks fun. I have a few questions though.

1. When you start off (lvl 10+) do you put all the talent points on the Prot. tree? or do i put anything in the other trees first then start stacking the prot. tree.

2. Which stances do you use at certain situations? I know you would use defensive if your tanking a dungeon, but what if your just questing/grinding?

3. Can someone show me a cookie-cutter build for leveling as a prot. spec?

thanks in advance for the answers :D

Hello,

The best way to generate tons of rage at low levels, and thusly keep the attention of all mobs around you, is with your first 12 talents points distributed as such: The starting build.

Shield Specialization is a great use of 5 talent points and it makes investing points in Anticipation even better. Even at level 15 you will be blocking, dodging, and parrying at least 1 of every 4 hits. At level 16 you get shield block which boosts your block rate to 100% for 10 seconds. Do the math on the rage and you can see that you will be swimming in it while tanking dungeons.

As for cookie cutter builds, you can find more variations out there. At least a few points are negotiable.

Shield Block and Revenge make defensive stance a really attractive option while questing. You can also do some stance dancing while questing if that makes you happy. You gotta learn how to play somehow =)

You might want to level as Arms. You can easily tank lowbie instances if you wish (with a shield and 1-hander obviously) and soloing won't make you want to watch a video every time you encounter a fight. Seriously, low-level prot is still pretty slow compared to a 2-hander. Maybe this build where you could then start in on Prot after 22 where I'd shoot for something like this.

If you really, really love the idea of being full Protection, consider waiting until 40 when Shield Slam becomes available and the tree starts to open up. And remember that at 60, you can score any of those Spec-Defining end tree talents (oh, Shockwave, how we love thee).

I'm seconding arms over prot for leveling to a point.

And here's my 2 cents;

1.
No. Generally I'd put your points in cruelty first. One of the most effective 1st tier talents for leveling.

2.
Defensive stance is less damage taken in, and more threat given out. Except after getting warbringer I generally live in defensive stance.
Battle stance will probably be your go to stance for the majority of playing. Charge is too handy to give up. Stance dancing is less required now, since many of the stance requirements for skills have been lifted. (at least the ones that made certain problems, like berserker rage works in defensive stance now, in previous wow's, it didn't). You don't require as much stance dancing as in the old days.
Berserker stance is decent for PvP (without warbringer or juggernaught) for in combat teleport stun and a little extra crit. But it's primary focus is DPS in a PvE environment.

3.
This isn't cookie cutter at all. So their isn't a "cookie cutter" build for leveling as prot. Shield slam is such a hugely important factor to how prot works, it is hard to justify going prot before level 40.

thanks so much for the input guys, I'm going to go along with leveling arms until either 40 or 60, if arms is too fun to let go at 40 then maybe ill wait til 60 to switch to prot. BTW is Protection spec in PVP any good? or is arms/fury better?

I'm going to have to disagree. I've ALWAYS tried leveling warriors as arms or fury, and never got past level 50. With my latest warrior, who dinged 80 this week, I levelled him as pure prot. I had a dual spec, for the opposite reason most people have dual specs. I would go prot for soloing, and ARMS for instances (until BC, where I was just prot for everything unless my buddy was tanking).
Prot offers so much survivability you never have to eat, bandage, or heal, which cuts down on leveling time significantly.

I leveled prot all the way to 80 and loved every minute of it. Was it slower than the other two specs? I'm not too sure as I never leveled as Arms or Fury (but probably). I do know, that it still took me approx. the same amount of time to level up as it would any other toon (and, I've leveled/been leveling quite a bit).

But as Jays said, I never really had downtime and could pull more than I could before.

But it's all personal preferance. Sorry, I couldn't contribute too much for your discussion on Arms or Fury though. Just figured I'd put in my two cents if you were really wanting to level Prot.
