Trying to Gear for Vault of ArchavonFollow

#1 Feb 14 2010 at 10:34 PM Rating: Decent
Hiya all. I was hoping to get some opinions on how close I am to be able to tank the 10 man version of VoA.

Here is my armory... http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Sargeras&cn=Aight

I tried to join a VoA group a couple of days ago, leader was asking for 4k gearscore or higher so I asked for an invite. He laughed and kicked me out on my but. /sore

My health when I'm self buffed runs to about 33.5k, I'm past the point of getting hit with crits, and I feel like I have decent avoidance for my gear. So what did I do wrong here?

If I was a potential Raid Leader I would be worried about your gear for the following reasons:

1. Your gemming for defense. This would be fine but your already way over being crit immune. You need 689 def rating or 540 defense for crit immunity.
2. Gemming parry over dodge is a big no-no even at your level of avoidance. Gem Agility/Stam or Dodge/Stam.
3. Meta. Change this to an Austere Earthsiege Diamond (32 stam/2% increase in armor). Will bump up your effective health and you dont need the defense rating.
4. Your gear. Almost all of it purchased through emblems. Whether its a new toon or your offspec it shows that your green when it comes to tanking raids. That's not your fault and everyone starts somewhere but for the common Raid leader of a pug it doesnt inspire confidence and can lead to other people dropping out.

I think had it not been for the new Toravon boss coming out in the past week or two you probably wouldnt have had a problem.

Thank you very much for the advice! I hadn't even looked at my gems since the time I was still in blues. Didn't think about needing to change them up.

And you're right, this was going to be one of my first raids. I had let the leader know about it before I got the invite and though he was okay with it. I'm off to the auction house for some nice dodge gems!

One of the pitfalls of gearing up a new toon to tank is being knocked back by PuGs because of your gear. Don't forget you can get another 500 or so health from enchanting your legs with a Leatherworker's agility/stamina patch.

There is a level of experience missing as well. Perhaps you've got a lot of alts but the raid leader can't know this and you've never tanked any raid at all. Toravon is largely ****** proof but you still need to be able to recognize when you need to taunt off the other tank and do this without someone spamming "TAUNT TAUNT TAUNT" in raidchat ideally.

Along this line you are much more likely to threat cap dps that are gonna be pugging in a VOA raid as you are gonna see some very geared and skilled people willing to pug this one as it can't be scheduled.

And they can get better geared tanks easily. In my personal opinion VOA is a broken instance. Particularly the 25 but the 10 as well. You can get gear you'd need to be able to do at least saurfang on 25 to get in the 25 man instance by killing an easily puggable boss in less than ten minutes. The reward is vastly too great for the effort. Which is why you want to tank it for sure, but its also why you can get hugely better geared tanks or classes with better geared tank offspecs to tank it as well.

My suggestion would be to find a casual guild that has a lot of players on large amounts of the time who would be more willing to take a guildie in for a spur of the moment VOA.
