new lvl 80 shammy needs helpFollow

#1 Feb 09 2010 at 1:50 PM Rating: Default
Hi,

I recently just got to 80 with my elemental shaman and I have a few questions. Sorry if I have to mash em' all up in this post but i'm just curious about a few things. I did read the sticky and quite a few posts in the forum but I am still confused about a few things.

1- Can someone explain the zeal for hit rating gear ? 296 cap correct ? I get the general picture that it'll help you not miss but, some are claiming it helps overall DPS ?? I can understand the logic that not missing will obviously boost your dps but if my hit rating is already not so bad in heroics, how can it help me then? I don't do raids just yet I don't have a guild so please keep that in mind.

2- Since my Alt is a mage, I was thinking of trying enhancing on shaman to take advantage of the hybrid class itself (mail and maces yay) but after getting a few pieces from heroics, I am pulling about 700 dps on Enhancing, while my Ele is much much higher. Why is it so low and what can I do to make it worthwhile ? Is it generally better to get fast weapons like daggers and focus on haste/crit/hit, or slower weapons like axes and maces and focus on crit/haste/hit ?

3- is it generally better to focus on hit rating, crit or haste? for Ele and for Enhancing ? or balance all 3 regardless of spec ? I just got 80 so I don't have top of the line gear yet so until I get there I would focus on the most important stats. I have about 100 ish hit rating, 20% crit (not counting extra talents and stuff, this is what I see in stat window) and 1800 spell power and about 100 haste too.

Again, I apologize for the gazillion questions mashed up in there, I'm just so unsure of stats necessary to pull good DPS on ele, and what to use at all on Enhancing since my Enh setup is sooooo crappy ... please share some insight on this poor new lvl 80

Hit rating is very important. I'm not sure what the hit cap is exactly, but my DPS nearly doubled when I capped mine in elemental. In my resto gear (mostly + crit, haste, and SP) I pulled about 2.8k DPS. I capped my hit rating with ele gear with pretty much the same crit, haste and SP and I was pulling 4.5k on average. This is unbuffed in 5 mans by the way. The hit rating cap for enhancement is much higher by the way. My suggestion is to gear resto at first to give you flexibility in dungeons. You can still do good DPS (for heroics) in resto gear. But you'll probably end up healing most of the time.

Hit rating doesn't just impact how many full resists (misses) you get with spells, it also impacts the number of partial resists you get. That's why hit rating is usually your best stat right the way up until you're capped.

Draenei enhancement shaman need 420 hit rating to reach the spell hit cap, which is where they want to be because a substantial part of their damage comes from spells (Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning and Shocks). It's a little higher for non-draenei because of the racial, though I don't recall exactly what the figure is.

The enhancement shaman dps "rotation" is not really something that comes naturally...there's a priority system involved in what you use and when. Two slow 1h weapons is always the way to go with enhancement. Imbue the MH with Windfury Weapon and the offhand with Flametongue Weapon and you're good to go.

Aurelius, thank you this helps a lot. This clarifies things much.

Just to make sure I understand, those partial resists you are talking about, are they applied before or after the initial damage has been decided ? ( Let's say LB does 1000-2000 damage, will partial resists make you hit closer to the 1000 or otherwise a high rating much closer to the 2000 displayed on the spell info ? Or is it that the number is totally random between the two extremes and then the resist factors comes into the equation ? Like a random 1256 damage LB was rolled but you got resisted for 50% making it 753 ?) But otherwise thank you this helps a lot and I will keep hit rating much more in mind now.

can you please detail the following ? I am having a hard time finding what to use and well as a rotation and more often than anything am sitting at 100% mana with very few dps. Since you recommend having flametongue on off-hand, does this mean you find yourself casting often ? Otherwise I would have thought more windfury would have made a stronger dps ??

Does this mean equally geared enhancing shaman and elemental will pull the same dps or is there one that pulls ahead of the other ?

and also, for gear stats priority how do you go ?

ele -> hit rating -> spell power/int -> and then what, haste or crit ????
enhancing -> hit rating -> agi ? str ? attack power ? crit or haste ? I am not a melee kinda guy not sure which stat is more important

Thanks a lot for answering btw =)
