Should I give up my T9 4 piece bonus to replace my current Sunstrider hood with the hood of smoldering aftermath? Also I am currently using the Egg of Mortal essence (nothing better has dropped for me yet) and the Sundial of the exiled. Last night I got a trinket that dropped in Heroic Halls of Stone (I think thats where it dropped) that gives 74 Haste and procs 1200ish shadow damage occasionally. I was wondering if I should use the haste trinket instead of the Egg of Mortal essence. If I make this change my SP drops to 2450 but my Haste goes up to 770. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Can you link your armory.

You should replace the egg with the talisman of resurgeance (assuming you are arcane). Also run and re-run normal ToC (5man) for the Abyssal Rune.

What ilvl is your hood? What does Rawr say about the DPS loss? I believe the 4pc is worth about 150+ dps. So if the hood is >150 dps over your hood then it may be worth it. I would really only start dropping set bonuses for the 2pc though of T10 (starting with the chest as I had merlins) next will be shoulders probably.

What spec are you? On frost spec, I dropped the 4 piece without even giving it a thought, and despite the fact that the hood was only a .05%ish spell haste increase, and around a 15 spellpower increase, I GAINED around 50 - 100 DPS. It's not much, but it certainly isn't a loss.
I'm actually at the point where I can comfortably drop the 2 piece and probably not care. If only I could find a robe to replace my T8 robe (Why, oh WHY does the T8 robe have better stats than the T9?!)

Here is my armory link. Please feel free to critique my gear and Gems. I am trying to improve my DPS aaaaat the moment and I have no access to any ICC Raids or 25 man content really. http://wow.allakhazam.com/profile.html?2628113

OK, I have to ask. Other than your ring, you're in full 232 / 245 gear. Why do you even need better gear? Link the hood in question, please.

I see two Crit / Spirit gems. At that point, you may as well have put yellow Crit gems in, because that's ALL you're getting from those.
I see hit gems. Again, no. NEVER gem for hit, EVER, on ANY class. You should change your leg enchant to spellpower / spirit (Stam is absolutely worthless to a glass cannon).
Your boots are chanted for hit. Switch to a run speed chant.
There, critiqued you just like you asked.

I disagree about gemming for hit. I've read for a long time that gemming for hit when you need a bit is fine. Gemming for crit, however, no, especially for an arcane mage. I'd gem sp/haste in those yellow spots in the legs. Icewalker is fine if you need the hit, but you'll probably start getting more hit in your gear, at which point you can use runspeed enchant. You can get by with 8% hit as arcane as long as you have a boomkin/spriest in your raids (I understand if you can't count on that, I couldn't for a long time). I wanted to give up my t9 helm for that cowl in ToC5, but I played fire too often back then to do it.

Here is the hood he's talking about:

I'm with Anobix, though, get those two trinkets he mentioned. I didn't break my 4pc until I got 2pc T10. Anyway, I loaded your toon into Rawr and it shows a dps loss for trading for that hood. The setup assumes a lot of buffs you might not be getting, so I don't know how correct that would be. The only upgrades Rawr shows are the 245 hood, the T10 and a hood from ICC10 that's not even available yet. Rawr also prefers a different gemming for your robe: sp/crit, sp/haste and sp. Straight sp on wrists. Belt sp/haste and sp. Again, my setup assumes a lot of buffs that you might not have, so install it and run it yourself to help with gemming and upgrades. :)

He's at 11% hit before talents, that's PLENTY.
Hit is important -in your gear,- but you should not gem or chant for it.

I'll gem or enchant for it. The way it was explained to me (on these forums) is that my crit can be 500 million, but if it hits the wall, it's 0.

Anyway, if he's hit capped, cool. If he's not, he needs to be. Yes, there are many discussions on EJ about how hit is "just another stat," but, really, at this gear level, be hit capped, for cereal. :)

Trill, back in TBC hit used to be much more important. Somewhere along the line, it became less important, and now general practice is that you do not gem for it. If you are only a little bit off, you should be perfectly fine being a tad short.

Yeah, and your hit can be 500 million, but if it hits for three damage, who cares? This simplistic view of hit was discarded early in BC. Hit really is just another DPS stat, albeit one that's more valuable point-for-point than most others. Saying "OMG YOU AREN'T HIT CAPPED!!!!" is pointless.
