I have a paladin at 21 that, for obvious reasons with the new RDF, I will be speccing as prot and running a lot of dungeons... problem is, I have never done most of these instances. How do I know where to lead the group? Trial and error? Addons? Jedi intuition?

They're all pretty linear. If in doubt charge ahead in whatever direction you please. If someone points out that you're going the wrong way, fall back on the old "yeah, but i was gonna kill these mobs for the xp".

I just suggest trying to avoid Wailing Caverns unless you have a map or an expert in your group. Even I still get lost in that place.

Gnomeregan can seem like a maze if you want to do everything, but most people take the shortcut straight to the end anyway. Other than those two, they're all pretty straightforward. Even Deadmines, where the maze was actually in trying to find the portal to get into the instance. Don't need to do that anymore.

Go over to wowhead or wowwiki and check out the instances. Each has a nice map and nice explanations of bosses, paths, etc. I'm not sure how quickly people are leveling these days, but if you plan to run the same instance a few times, it can't hurt to familiarize yourself with them ahead of time.

You can always run WoW in windowed mode and keep a web page with the instance map open to refer to.

If you download a map mod like atlas, you can get an (albeit crappy) map of the instances, with markings where the bosses are. It won't tell you if there is anything special to spawn it, no, but those aren't THAT common.

Beyond that, wowwiki generally has guides for many of them. But I say just go ahead and say "I've never been here before." If someone knows the way in your group, they'll guide and you can use your map. If not, use your map and everyone's equal anyway.

Sunken Temple is pretty confusing as well, even with a map. I would just (wo)man up and say you dont know where you are going if you get that instance. If someone else does, they may speak up, otherwise you will be wandering around for ages.

Learn by doing.

Places like ZF can be confusing - Learn by following.

Places like BRD are confusing no matter how many times you've been there.

Most TBC and Wrath instances are better designed - you won't have this issue for long.
