Does anyone know if you can target a party member by role? I was wondering if I could change my macro for Tricks of the Trade to target "Tank" (or "Healer" if I am in an evil mood) instead of a focus target.

I don't think so as there really isn't a way to tell who is actually the tank (there could be a pally, warrior and DK in the group, for example) without specifying it.

I could be wrong though as I don't really use macros, but that would be my guess

You won't be able to set by role, but you can set a focus. Macro is something like:

/[target=focus]
/cast Tricks of the Trade

When you enter the dungeon or raid you find the tank and either right click their unit frame and choose "Set Focus" or target them and type /focus and you are all set.

When swapping with another DPS you may want to add:

/w [target=focus] You have tricks of the trade, go all out!

Or something of the such so they know to use their heavy stuff while the buff is up.

Someone may want to verify my macro, I am not at a real computer.

No. Sorry.

And for clarification you would use this:

/cast [@focus] Tricks of the Trade

after setting your focus target of course.

Then again, some of us have much more complicated versions but that's the basic cleaned up version now.

Yeah I already use the macro with focus. I have noticed that my focus target gets cleared from time to time. This happens every time the tank mounts up in Occulus. I was hoping for a lazy-man's approach. I want my Ron Popiel "Set it and Forget it" macro. I run randoms with a full 5 man group and my focus target usually stays from instance to instance. I get caught off guard when it clears and it costs me a trip to the spirit realm.

edited for too many uses of usually.

Occulus is the only instance I have really noticed this in, due to the Drake mounting. Not sure if there is a work around, other than setting the character name as your target rather than focus. Of course, this would involve you going into your Macro and changing "focus" to "Ub3rz1337Tanx" whenever you get Occ and then changing it back to focus all the other times.
