Is there such a thing as too much defence ???

My DK tank has 569 Def now. It's way over the 540. Even if I take away the Def rune, I still have 544 Def. But I'm keeping it for the 2% stam.

No, I didn't gem or have any def enchants. This is purely from gear (no def trinklet either).

Should I keep it that way? or switch to a DPS rune for my weapon?

There is no such thing as too much defense, at least not as long as you're not gemming for it. 540 defense isn't a cap, it's a minimum requirement, and more defense helps your surviveability.

However, if your dps need to slow down their damage output to avoid stealing your aggro, you could try switching out a couple of items to boost your tps. But check with your healers first. Not much point in having a lot of threat if your healers can't keep you up :o)

As the other poster said, you can't have too much defense as long as you aren't actively seeking it. You may want to make sure you don't have Def enchants, too, though. Many of them can be replaced with superior ones if you don't need to get to 540. For example, Enchant Bracer-Major Defense gives +12 Defense. But Enchant Bracer- Major Stamina gives +40 Stam. When you don't need to reach crit-immune, the latter is MUCH better.

And, if you are using any stam/def gems to get socket bonuses, you might even consider stam/hit to replace them.

Only switch to a DpS rune if you are doing Heroics, or REALLY need the threat and your healers okay it.

Remember, Stoneskin Gargoyle gives you 3% avoidance (1% Dodge, 1% Parry, 1% Miss) and 2% Stam.

On that note, has anybody got an idea what the actual defense cap is? Or should I give EJ a search for that?

No idea, but I'm pretty sure you could never hope to hit it. And if we keep increasing your Dodge and Parry ratings as we boost Defense, you'll eventually hit a point (if it is uncapped) that the only benefit you get is miss chance. But I'm sure that has a cap.

Theoretically, the cap could be 75% reduction to Crit (since that is the crit cap, I believe).

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do look it up, though, be sure to post it here. I like learning new things.

Here we go, a simple google linked me this interesting thread. If I'm interpreting it correctly, the OP is right and the defense cap before diminishing returns is 2200 defense skill, which in turn means that with 25 rating to one skill, you'd need about 55.000 defense rating to ensure a dodge/parry/miss before the diminishing returns. After the first avoided attack the DR kicks in and you're hittable again, even if you have over a million defense skill. Which would put the actual cap (the point at which you're forever unhittable) at infinity+1.

That's quite a lot, actually, even in comparison with other caps - It isn't even possible to get even halfway to the pre-DR def cap (1100 def skill = 27.500 rating). Something like 75% (=~3450 rating) crit seems a lot easier to achieve, even though still impractical and improbably.
