past def capFollow

HI Guys,
My pally is at 550 defense exactly. Now that I'm def capped I want to increase my ability to deal damage or should I keep trying to increase my health and defense?

If you're raiding, just keep pushing your HP, Armor, and Avoidance up. Your ability to deal damage will naturally increase as your STR and SP increase with continued gear upgrades. Don't push threat stats (damage) at the expense of defensive stats if you're doing challenging content.

If you're just running heroics or Naxx (do people still do that?), it doesn't really matter for the most part, though PUGs will judge you by your HP pool.

This is why I strongly dislike the term "def cap". It's misleading.

A better term is "crit immune." 535 is crit immune for heroics, 540 is crit immune for raids. Adding defense above and beyond that still increases your mitigation stats. Generally speaking, tanks don't gem/enchant for threat. Those stats already come on our gear. We augment for avoidance and/or stamina.

should I be switching to more dps gear instead of gear that offers defense? Keeping in mind sta and str are about the same.

No. You want tank gear with Stamina, Armor, Defense, and Avoidance stats, unless you grossly overgear content you're doing.

I would add that really the only things you'd want to look at from a "this is for increasing my threat" standpoint are a DPS weapon if it has higher stam/DPS and you can keep crit immune, and like some poeple do use the Accuracy enchant. Other than that you should focus only on tanking gear, gems, and enchants.

Here is what you do… In each suggestion you must maintain all the suggestions above it. So you can only Start #2 if it doesn’t break the #1 suggestion….

1. Reach Def-Cap of 540.
- Being >540 isn’t bad, but it’s neither needed nor desired as you can start to stack other things that more directly benefit you.
2. Gear for Stamina. You really want to hit 26k or greater, but honestly you could tank a heroic with 23k. The new ICC 5mans are great places to get this gear.
3. When you start to hit 28k-30k hp – start to look elsewhere. The new ICC 5man gear doesn’t have much block. (My guess is they don’t want to have Tank gear that is only valuable to 2 classes…) But basically you want to start gearing for Block, Dodge, Parry. Your goal is to continually add HP while getting you TOTAL Avoidance to 102.4% (with your shield UP) aka – Block Cap. This will mean that essentially every hit is blocked.
4. From here you want to develop different tanking sets. You need a “Soaking” set that is very heavy on Stamina. Really bump that HP up. It’s great for learning encounters.
5. Then you want to have a Threat set. Maintain that 540 Def, but really bump up the threat. (Mostly that just means STR – We get very little from ArPen.) But Agility is also nice as it will add a slight bit of crit.

I would really like to add that when you reach around 80% Dodge + Block + Parry + Miss, Defense raises avoidance more per point than dodge or parry.

102.4% dodge + block + parry outside of ICC is the 'avoidance cap.' This is the point at which you can no longer be struck by anything but Glancing, Miss, Dodge, Block, or Parry. In heroics, this means you pretty much hardly need a healer, if at all (My pally is capable of 1 tank, 4DPS in the easier heroics).

Personally, I would go for a Nighttime axe off of Brownjames and keep the rest of your gear as tanking gear (though, the Ret 245 libram has been tempting me for a while).
