BoE's worth purchasingFollow

Trying to get some nice items banked for my mage when they hit 80. Are there any particular items that are BoE (or rep like the ashen ring) that are BiS or close enough to BiS to be worth the investment? I spent a while last night cruising WoWhead and its ilk. So far I think I'm going to look for good prices on Merlin's Robe, Bejeweled Wizard Bracers and focus on getting the Ashen Verdict Ring (as ready with rep). Everything else seemed easily replaced by Emblems of Triumph. Always like to have my work double checked and hoped that perhaps someone else has been pondering this same question as of late.

And since I'm posting I'd also like to ask if spellweave or ebonweave is generally considered more useful for pre-T9 mages. I'm leaning toward the +hit set, but I am reading a lot about mages trying to get rid of hit (albeit these mages appear to be T10ish)

I don't know about BiS, but Merlin's Robe is a very good investment. If you could only purchase one piece of gear, go with that. The Ashen Verdict Ring requires that you run the ICC raids, which will probably not happen while gearing up. I suggest looking at the Onaxia quest turn-in ring. That's something you could get through a PuG midway through gearing up (though you may have to run Onaxia a few time to win the roll). For heroics, go with the spellweave.

If you make an effort to combine some high level BoEs and reasonably priced crafted gear (spellweave) before jumping into heroics, people will appreciate it. You'll be rolling in Triumph emblems in no time. Once you get into emblem gear, worry about hit capping. If you're still wearing ebonweave (or spellweave) gear, you will have a hard time getting into raids, so the hit rating doesn't help you.

All it really requires is farming trash, which is done via pugs all the time on most servers, and they mostly want live bodies who can do some dps. You don't even need to get saved to the instance, and can farm trash as much as you want. Sometimes these pugs will attempt do actually do the bosses, so you could maybe get some time (and possibly loots) on the bosses.

If you are doing the daily randoms every day/weeklies every week, you can eventually get the new tier gear from frost badges, and, of course, you are also farming triumphs at the same time, for your t9 stuff.

Ony also drops a decent back and weapon. There's also a helm there, if you don't have your tier stuff yet. And you'll also want the haste trinket from regular ToC. I still see a lot of pugs running it for that and something else. Not BoE stuff, but easily do-able.

You could buy the battered hilt for a very good weapon, but it's like wayyy expensive on most servers.

From what I understand, on my server the ICC rep farming does not do any bosses. I have yet to see a GS shout for them either. They go in, kill trash, exit, reset, repeat.

I think that's how it works, at least.
