How much time (if any) should you allow the tank to
establish aggro before commencing an AoE attack on
trash ? Assume an average tank and if it makes any
difference, a Pally or Bear. Also assume the Lock
is Destro specc'ed and decently equipped. Thx.

There's no set answer to this question because there are too many variables. And by that I mean even if you put aside the gear and skill of the tank and lock, there is still the RNG of crits/hits/misses on the mobs, stuns/silences, etc.

Therefore, this is really a situational judgment call on the lock's part. Wait a second on the first set of mobs so that the tank can grab initial aggro and then start your AoE. If you are instantly grabbing aggro, then on the next pull maybe DoT a mob and then AoE. If you are still stealing aggro even if you aren't critting, then you may need to switch to a single-target attack strategy. Going through the random heroic daily for frost emblems I have run into a wide variety of tanks, and you just have to adjust your playstyle accordingly.

Always be a smart dps, and therefore always be alert and aware.

AHA! :) Although I have a level 80 'Lock what prompted this occurred while I was healing in CoS. At this
point I have healed maybe 30 instances so tbh I am still learning. In any case I was not expecting my
'Lock to be getting early hate mail from mobs and I did not heal him properly. That part was my fault for
not catching it early enough. What I am concerned with is why the 'Lock was getting all that unwelcome
early attention. In other words if its something that he/she/other should not be doing I need to know
about so I can either correct it or allow for it. If its not out of line then I need to L2P. I think I've
got a pretty good idea of which it is now. This will help me both as a healer and a dps. Thx.

Actually sounds like the Loc was starting his attack to early which was a problem I was having until I decided to wait for a count of 3 or more depending on the tank and other variables. It lowers my DPS score on trash but I feel living and not stressing the healer is also a benifit. If the group yells about the low DPS I tell them I'm adjusting for the Threat levels and trying not to pull aggro or cause the healer problems.

This is pretty much the conclusion I came to as well. As you said it depends a lot on the tank but I haven't as yet seen
as case where it was called for in 5 mans.

It depends.

What kind of tank are they? What kind of gear do they have? What kind of gear do you have? What spec are you? What spec are they (if DK at least)?

What content are you doing?

Etc, etc, etc.

(1) What kind of tank are they? (2) What kind of gear do they have? (3) What kind of gear do you have?
(4) What spec are you? (5) What spec are they (if DK at least)?

(6) What content are you doing?

Etc, etc, etc.

1&5) Tank was a Prot Pally Level 74
2) Gear was a mixture of Tempered Saronite, a couple/three other Northrend Blues,
one or two Northrend Greens, and one or two Level 70 epics. That's about all I
remember. I was mainly interested in whether his defense was up to it. Which it
was.
3) I was in three pieces of i187 Blues, three pieces of i200 Blues, and the rest was
i200 epics.
4) Resto Druid Level 80.
6) Drak'Tharon Normal

If you are wondering about why I was not healing Heroics the reason is 1) I am not
all that experienced as a healer 2) due to guild fail (friends of long duration) I had
not run many instances at all (no tank) so a lot of the content was not memorized as
yet. 3) My healer is a tailor and I wanted to get all the Northrend 5 mans done fast in
order to make Wispcloaks.

If it is a Warrior wait for him to Thunderclap, during shockwave is probably the best time.
If it is a palading tank Wait till all mobs go inside the yellow stuff and he does Hammer of the righteous.
