New druid after DPS adviceFollow

#1 Dec 30 2009 at 6:52 AM Rating: Decent
Hey folks,

I'm a new player and was hoping for a quick bit of advice. I have a level 18 druid, all my talent points are in Feral and I've just completed my first deadmines run. During the instance I was DPS and had a complete blast apart from my DPS which was the lowest in the group (the other DPS was a mage, warlock and a hunter) I was not in bear form and used spell damage to inflict DPS, as a result my mana was always low.

From reading the posts here I understand that when I get my cat form my DPS will improve, but having been bit by the bug I want to spend a lot more time in dungeons between now and then.

So, before I get cat form how should I be playing in low level dungeons?

Thanks for your help.

If you can tough it out, and level outside of dungeons, until you get cat form that might be best. Only 2 more levels, and life will get a lot easier. :-)

Either that or try to tank it in bear form. That could be fun too...

Seconded :)

I'm assuming from your post that the Hunter was using his pet as a tank, since you had 4 DPS in a 5-man group? If you enjoy running dungeons, a tank is generally more sought-after than DPS, and if you decide you like it, you'll be in a much better position to get random runs in all the other instances as you level up. In early dungeons, I believe you can tank fine even with a kitty-focussed talent spec, although I confess I never tried it.

If you want to stick with DPS, then you're probably going to struggle to match other classes until you get kitty form. Your DPS and mana problems were most likely because you're talented for Feral, and you're basically DPSing as Balance. You *could* respec your talents to Balance until you hit lvl 20, then switch back, but as you're a new player that may well be a bit expensive for you.

You should be tanking. Just keep FFF on CD. While not doing that hit Swipe and keep Maul queued up.

The DPS will be higher than being a caster with a melee spec and you will wait time less for groups.

At level 80 I wait around 5 seconds to get a group as a tank.

Even up to 60 or so, you can heal instances as feral as long as you keep a decent set of intellect gear as you level. This is often useful for group quests as you level higher as well. Just make sure you aren't doing dungeons you are too low for and you should be fine.

But cat form will make a massive difference to your DPS too. You'll be amazed how much difference that one ability will make.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'm not far from level 20 now and enjoying the DPS role so I think I'll carry on with that role as tanking seems like a big responsibility this early on.

Having said that, during the last instance that I played, the healer died and I managed to keep the tank alive, averting a wipe, which gave me a feeling of satisfaction that I haven't got elsewhere in the game yet so I may well go down that route later on.
