Resuming my mage.Follow

#1 Dec 27 2009 at 2:08 AM Rating: Decent
Hi,
I haven't played since the release of Wotlk (never had wotlk) so I'm still a 70 mage. I'm going to start to play again soon and I want to ask a few questions. Let me keep it short and sweet.

-What spec is good for leveling? I heard it was frost when wotlk just came out
-Can you give me a link to the talent spec?
-What is the best crafting gear once I max tailoring and where is it at (meaning is it for starting heroics, is it for starting dungeons etc)

Thanks in advance.

Frost is still an easy leveling build. You could dump all 71 points into the frost tree if all you did was solo play. There isn't much to be gained from the upper parts of the other talent trees unless you are going into PvP or you want to max your single target dps with a torment the weak frost/arcane build.

Your question pertaining to tailoring is a bit confusing. My interpretation is that you want to know the relative quality level of the craftable cloth items available and in what situations you might be expected to use (or not use) them. In that respect the iLvl245 items can be used in the hardest of content if the rest of your gear is on par with that level. I tend to think of using crafted gear as a waste of gold unless you have a bunch of best in slot gear and you have 1 or 2 holes in which upgrades have been elusive.

I like frost or arcane for leveling, both have their benefits.

You can pretty easily put together your own leveling build, go to wowhead and put one together with glyphs and such if you are still confused and we can try to help out if we see something wrong. -- teach a man to fish... etc

As for crafted gear, I wouldn't waste the gold on leveling your tailoring to max unless you are raiding high level content that gets patterns people want, there aren't any BoP recipes anymore, tailors get the back enchants at 420 I think. You are probably better off with running 5mans while leveling, saving money to buy some BoE epics from the AH (it can be difficult to get into heroics now without being raid geared), you may be able to get by with the spellweave set or the ebonweave set as they give haste/hit (respectively) but they can be more expensive than they are worth. Probably better off gearing up through badges/heroics using the LFG tool.

Ok thank you both for your advice, I think I can manage the talent part myself after finding a great link to one. But regarding pre-heroics, would I be able to enter with quested gear at all? Some say you cannot see heroics if your iL is too low? If thats true then what would you suggest doing, farming full blue normal dungeons, or crafting the spellweave set?

One more thing I was curious about, when leveling as frost is it possible to get the eternal WE glyph? isn't it better for leveling since the WE with the freeze only lasts 45 secs, comparing with an eternal WE with constant water bolt dps compared to 2 shatter combos every 3 minutes?

With my lock I took on about 3 mobs with affli spec, with my mage I was also able to do this with frost (considering mobs my lvl) by using WE to the max when ever the CD was up. I had sent it in into one mob, used its freeze on another with shatter and then FB another mob and repeated this every time; is this viable and mana efficient at all in WoTLK leveling?

Thanks in advance

Found a website wich will give loads of info ur looking for. You can look up ur Gearscore and Realmranking, but more important; you can find what spec is most populair and most used per spec and wich Glyphs are best for that spec.

see for urself: http://www.wowranked.com/classstat.php?cid=8

The level requirement on the Glyph of Eternal Water is 50, so you should be able to level with it. It's really up to you whether you want to use it. It is an overall DPS increase, but leveling requires more than just DPS sometimes.

There is a chicken-and-the-egg problem about planning on using token gear and buying BoEs. There are plenty of people gearing up in the LFG system. You may run into a few jerks, but usually people will be fine if they see that you're making an effort to improve your gear. At least the spellweave set is purple.

I'm afraid Anobix is right, though. It would be more efficient (but less fun) to focus on making money and just buy your way into T9. If you find a Merlin's Robe on the AH you'll be in great shape for a long time. Paradoxically, tailoring can't help you with that very much.
