Pimp my specFollow

Pretty new 80 mage as you can see - working on the gear with the badges, pvp honor and daily heroics (suggestions on what to buy definitely welcome too though) but I'm not feeling that I'm really excelling in most instances, especially with higher groups when mobs often die before I can even get a fireball off.

So what's some good suggestions for instance spec - won't be raiding but will be doing heroics and whatnot?

With the speed of fights in 5 mans, Arcane really shines, in my experience(fire loses a lot to ignites not fully ticking before deaths). It has been a while since I played with arcane, though, so I'll have to wait for someone else to pop down a spec for ya.

Edit: I'm not sure how well Frost will stack up considering the changes 3.3 brought to it, so it too might be worth investigating.

Frost is great for heroics. Blizzard hits trash like a mack truck, and the bosses are usually dead in one cooldown pop, so your DPS is insane there.

I've been regearing my mage from his old naxx gear, upgrading in heroics to the t9 and other pieces. I tried fire at first, did decent on trash pulls (LB, flamestrike, blizz, flamestrike, blizz) but single target I was failing for some reason.

Switched to arcane and my DPS is much improved single target, and I didn't lose that much damage on AOE. I just spam blizzard on packs of 4+ mobs now, it keeps me somewhat competitive with any other AOE'er even when I'm outgeared.

Also popping cooldowns and spamming arcane blast on 35 second bosses is fun.

Fire can theoretically do reallllly great dps even in aoe zerg fests but your threat level will probably hold you back from walking up to a pack of mobs and doing a Dragon's Breath, insta flamestrike, blast wave, insta flame strike. It's difficult to maximize fire aoe damage for a variety of reasons but if you want to try then....

use this spec. You get the added hit from Precision and lose a bunch of your sucky talents in favor of raw power increases. Also your glyphs are weak. Fireball, Molten Armor, and Living bomb are the way to go. The minor glyph of blast wave is also a good pick up. It's fairly annoying for tanks when you knock back mobs and sucky for you when you throw some of them out of range of flame strike.

The cookie cutter Arcane 57/3/11 build is really easy to play in almost any situation and would be a good way to go.

Frost is easy to play as well. Load up on offensive talents that increase damage/crit and spam blizzard until there are fewer than three mobs left, then frost bolt/ice lance as needed while keeping your elemental out for as much kill time as possible.

So you suggest a half-assed frostfire build? Where it would be better to just spec for ffb and blizzard etc if all you want is aoe talents.

Besides the ignite issue it's almost impossible to get a fireball cast off before the melee annihilate your target. Also living bomb almost never seems to go off now...darn t9 dps boost...

I've suggested 3 different builds, two of which are fairly standard, mind numbingly simple to play, and already mentioned in the thread. The one you called into question was a modification of the build he was using (did you look at his spec/gear?) based around fire aoe talents. You've made the assumption that "all you want is aoe talents" which wasn't my premise.

I realize this talent spec isn't streamlined for efficiency, but it is leaps and bounds better than the one he was/is using, at least for PvE, and it's a lot of fun to play. A 5 man strategy based on fire aoe teaches mobility, timing, and threat control a lot better than spamming blizzard for 25 minutes while still being competitive with the formerly fabulous cookie cutter frostfire build.
