Frost Raiding in 3.3.Follow

#1 Dec 19 2009 at 12:54 PM Rating: Default
Now before everyone starts laughing.....there have been a few changes in 3.3, that just may make Frost a PVE spec. Making the pet eternal is a huge one. Increaseing the damage done by the Deep Freeze is also significant. And there are a few other minor changes in the fingers of frost proc and such.

So, Here is my spec:

First of all, any improvements you think that could be done to increase DPS?
Also what do you think of the idea of frost raiding, and what are your experiances if you have started already?

I ran a few ICC 10 mans and 25 mans as frost, with DPS loss of about 500-700. I dono if it is worth staying frost, even though it is more fun.
So what do you think of FROST RAIDING?!?! (Pros and Cons)

I recommend reading through jaysql's frost pve FAQ about 5 threads before yours. He covers all of this.

I personally will not touch a spec unless it either provides top-dps or near-top plus a necessary buff (scorch for instance as fire) but I'm always vying for top3 dps in a pseudo-progression oriented guild.

Where should I start?

Ok, glyphs. You have the glyph of Ice barrier. That's bad. You want the Glyph of Frostbolt. Not having that glyph is losing you a TON of DPS.
Gems. You have gems in some odd choices. You should have -two- Spell power / Spirit gems. Other than that, gem pure spell power. NEVER gem for haste, ever. NEVER (as ANY spec) gem for hit, ESPECIALLY raw hit.
Trinket. Your badge trinket is trash. It's so bad it sometimes makes me want to kick a child. A couple of good alternatives are the iLvl 200 Heroism trinket, the Direbrew event trinket, or the Eye of the Broodmother from Ulduar 10.
Spec. You NEED one point in Frostbite for Fingers of Frost to properly function. This is not optional. You can remove those points in Arctic Reach and Cold as Ice and put them elsewhere. One point in frostbite, one point in improved blizzard, 2 in Spell Impact. Remove 1 or two points from Brainfreeze and put them in Arcane Meditation. With one point in Brainfreeze, I still have the buff up 90% of the time.

What rotation / priority system are you using?
Go ahead and check out my FAQ, as Anobix said, paying attention to the addendum of 3.3.

I was really excited about going frost for raiding. I tried, I tried hard. But unless you and your guild are fine with subpar dps frost isn't the way to go. It doesn't even come close to arcane and the additional raid buff they added to arcane is significant. One of the warriors noticed the buff and kept asking "what is the arcane thing" He had to ask several times before I remembered the 3% dmg increase for the entire raid when I crit. Frost has replenishment. That's nice, but people seem to prefer the dmg increase. Like I said, if you enjoy frost and your guild is cool with it have fun. We have started focusing on 10 man stuff and I am always 1 or 2 in DPS. When I went frost it really affected our raids negatively.

Generally speaking, nearly every raid group had the 3% buff before anyway, as it was given passively by Ret Pallies. And Hunters had a way to give it too (I think BM did it). As I've had a Ret pally in 80% of my groups this expansion (and I don't think I'm exaggerating), I can't image a raid that doesn't take one along. Especially because they ensure the 3% damage, 3% Haste, 3% crit AND replenishment (REALLY BLIZZ?) And, yes, ALL of that is given by a single Ret Pally.

I'm sure Frost isn't the spec you'll use in the cutting edge content. But for a more casual guild, it's definitely nice. And they'll slowly buff it more if the trend continues.

I tried this a little.

Like jaysql says in his thread, you *can* put out pretty good DPS as frost. I was surprised how much damage I could put out when things were working properly.

A few problems I've found:
- Deep Freeze is now cool, but RNG dependent and not very reliable (you need it to be off cooldown and have FoF proc). In a 2 minute fight, you'll get 1 or 2 off, when you really should get 3 or 4.
- Threat mitigation is high for arcane compared to frost and fire, which can be hard to adjust to if you're used to dropping 20k crits and not drawing aggro. The buff to Deep Freeze has caused me problems here. How do the fire guys handle this?
- Damage is still not there... despite being better.
- Bad instant casts. Fire and arcane give you a couple of spells that allow you to move and dps a little. It's not as easy to do and keep the numbers up with frost.

Another problem I have is pet management, but that's a whole separate issue and not a flaw with the tree.

Overall the DPs is less, but i did notice that we might be giving a buff to the raid...I dono if it stacks or not. I think its ARtic winds maybe? i dono remember, but it increases all spell dmg by 5%...and replenishment from pet is good. however, i dono if that SP effect stacks with others?

but it is fun to mess around with in 5 mans cause I still pull 5k on bosses with it since i blow all my CDs...since the fights are about 30 secs each haha.

The Spell Power buff is only to you.
The Replenishment, though, contrary to popular belief, comes from your frostbolt, not your pet, so you have it up 100% of the fight.
Frost does, however, add the crit debuff to mobs with your commonly used rotation, so other mages can get a 'buff' from not having to scorch.

too bad frost replenishment is bad as it resets ticks too early compared to the other sources making it inefficient in returning mana.
