Windfury/Stormstrike questionFollow

Greetings again Shaman forum :) I have a little more "technical" question if you will regarding the 2 abilities in my subject line, the Windfury Weapon buff and Stormstrike.

With the addition of The Frozen Halls there's a number of new weapons for Enhancement Shaman. Now, I know these spells work better in conjunction with slower weapons, but how exactly does the damage of those weapons affect each spell?

I just got Nighttime and have been using it in my main hand (was using 2 Tankards). Well, another Nighttime dropped, and I was the only one who needed it, but then I got to thinking about another drop Seven-Fingered Claws. You can see they have identical speed and DPS, but the fist has a higher low end damage and a lower high end damage making it have a more consistent range.

Do Windfury/Stormstrike function like a normal melee attack in that they can hit for anywhere within the weapon's range (modified of course), or do they take the average weapon damage, or maybe even take the top end weapon damage when determining the damage that attack will do? Short: would both the weapons linked above function the same with these attacks?

I hope that is clear :) Thank you to anyone who can clear up this for me :D

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe they function based on the range of damage.

In the case of two weapons of identical speed and tooltip dps, you're not really going to notice a difference over time. Averages being what they are and all, they'll work out to be about the same. And the general rule with fist weapons these days is that they're sub-optimal for enhancement shaman if for no other reason than they almost always carry the main hand/off-hand designation which restricts your options when it comes to upgrades. When you're talking about having a pair of iLvl232 weapons equipped it's not that big of a deal, but if you were to find yourself in a position where you had a main hand fist weapon that was hands down better than your offhand and then you get an even better weapon on down the line, you end up having to either put your new best weapon in your offhand slot (not ideal) or replace your previous best weapon with your new weapon and leave your worst weapon equipped (also not ideal).

Fist weapons are shaping up to be more the domain of rogues, which personally I find to be rather dumb. Rogues were given axes because it was the best solution Blizzard could come up with to justify putting more 1h weapons that enhancement shaman could use in loot tables. They felt that their only other option would have been to give enhancement shaman access to swords but they didn't think it fit with the lore issues surrounding the class. So rogues get an extra weapon and in exchange, itemization on fist weapons has shifted away from what most enhancement shaman would want (ie. Armor Penetration is not a stat Enhancement shaman are stacking these days but most fist weapons I'm seeing in T9/10 come with it instead of haste).

A rather important point. Even more so since you might (probably will) end up with the Quel'Denar mace equivalent eventually. This should definitely replace your 232 MH, whatever it might be, and rendering the Seven-Fingered Claws completely useless.

To me this decision is about money, not so much DPS. I don't have the extra cash lying around to put an expensive enchant on something that is likely to be replaced. I am also looking at my 2 Tankards being iLevel 226 after all and having excellent stats on them - in addition to both of them being enchanted. I think that puts me in a position where I am in no need to rush to replace them.

I do have Nightime x 2 and the Claws as well, but I don't think either one of them will find it's way from the bank into my hands anytime soon. I first want Black Icicle(s) as well and then have a look at my overall gear at the time and decide which one(s) of them fit in best based on their bonus stats.
