Dumb question is dumb...Follow

...but imma ask it anyways.

My mage is currently level 70 and I've decided to make the random daily dungeon a part of his leveling routine because free EoT while leveling are pure sex.

My issue is that I'm deep frost for leveling and it SUCKS in groups. It's boring as hell and altogether too proc-y to be fun. I basically spam frostbolt unless/until I get a brain freeze/FoF proc and then either lob my fireball or spam a couple of ice lances until I'm out of proc-y stuff and then go back to spamming frostbolts. AoE pulls are not bad, but I have a somewhat irrational dislike for padding meters with AoE after having spent so much time on my shaman (aka one-target wonder).

What I'm wondering is if either of the other two specs offer more variety in groups. I have the gold lying around to pick up dual spec for my mage but for the most part, I'm not interested in experimenting at the expense of group performance so I'm just looking for a little bit of feedback before I dive in. The idea is to make the best contribution to each group that my skill/class allows and have fun doing it.

Tips appreciated ^^

Arcane can be a fun leveling spec, just remember to pick up slow for when you are soloing. At this point you have all of the arcane abilities ready for you so a relatively easy rotation while watching for procs with a couple cooldowns isn't too bad.

I'm happy with frost for leveling...one of my favorite things to do is drop a blizzard on a group of mobs and then when it stops channeling see how many I can gib with ice lance before they break out. I just found that for groups, not only was it dull but it was frustrating to watch a mob go from 10k health to dead while I was waiting for a frostbolt cast to get off and having nothing to use in its place that was worth using.

I'll look over arcane, though. I've decided to let my mage stock up on some rested xp for a bit while I focus on my hunter (who, until today, had been sitting at level 73 for a couple of months). I still plan on taking my mage through the random daily dungeon whenever time permits, so I'll do some tweaking and see if I can't make it a bit more...interactive ;D

I would suggest picking up Arcane or Fire until you're 80. As I've stated before, Frost DPS is abysmal in groups until you have enough haste to support it (2 second unbuffed frostbolt).

I picked Arcane around 26 or something, and just hit 79 today. It solos well enough for me, depending on when Missile Barrage procs, but I totally love its group DPS. I started breaking 2k against bosses as early as 72. The 2 minute Evocation cooldown, Clearcasting, Missile Barrage, and Arcane Meditation make your mana bar last a long time. I usually don't even drink.

But it weakens your AoE grinding quite a bit. No more blizzard slow, chill buffs, or ice barrier. I've done almost all of my kills by single target, even in instances with AoE packs.

I wound up going Arcane. My spec is probably a little off...I didn't use any templates or anything else like that. I just put points into what looked like PvE talents and away I went. What a huge difference in groups. I went from 600-800 dps as Frost at level 70 to 1000-1100 dps as Arcane. I just finished a Nexus run at level 71 and did about 1200 dps overall (1400 dps on the last boss). I'm still using the heirloom trinkets and I've yet to work any other cooldowns into my repertoire, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with it. And the best part is that as soon as the dungeon is over, I can switch back to Frost for easy-mode solo leveling :D
