Time to sub in some Mail/Leather?Follow

At my gear level (no access to togc25), should I start subbing in some mail/leather to build more crit? I'm seeing lots of higher-end ret pallies doing it, and losing the 4t9 bonus in place of achieving a universal gain of 5+% crit. Here's my armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Medivh&n=Klens.

(If you're going to take it upon yourself to tell me I can afford to lose hit and expertise, don't waste your breath. I'm aware and have no current alternatives)

There isn't any mail or leather with strength though. Crit is better than armpen (which is on 2 pieces of T9 granted) and haste but still much worse than straight str stacking after hit cap.

I know those dont have str..not my point. i'm talking building person crit to around 40% solo. on a sarth 3d zerg this other ret pally with 50 more AP but 5% more universal crit did 8.5k (with higher % attacks on Sarth) while I did 6.8. Yes, he was BS, while I was not yet JC (but am now). Your STR stacking...I'm asking if there's a semi-threshold after which it makes sense to build up universal crit more.

Nope. Not until very unrealistic numbers (like if you had 1 million str and could add 1k str or 1k crit rating. 1k str would make little difference, 1k crit rating would cause the damage from that massive AP pool to crit constantly).

In addition to this, crit rating on items is very expensive in terms of item budgeting vs actual effect. A leather chest would be budgeted with 70 agi and 50 crit rating. The agi gives rogues extra AP, so they're fine with that even though the agi and CR only adds maybe .4% chance to crit. It'll contribute very little to a ret since you don't get the AP. Strength on the other hand on a plate chest gives two times the AP and is multipled by talents. And str is affected by raid buffs, crit isn't etc etc.

The other ret either performed better or was very lucky with rng (sarth 3d zerg right? Being such a short fight, random luck will cause dps to change wildly from attempt to attempt).

Aside from RNG, a place where I can see that retadin perhaps beating me out again would be a situation like my togc10 comp. Where I'm the only melee and only receive kings, wild, and horn...while our range get a boomkin crit, elemental oath, scorch, and curse of elements. So for that ret pally at 5175 AP (still very decent for togc10), instead of clearly having the short end of the stick, he'd make up that gap somewhat with +5% personal crit. Depending on the fight, I still range from 5k to 10k dps (accepting the hybrid tax)...and yes I do ToC25, where I get all the melee buffs I need--wish I had access to togc25.

Won't be much different in ToGC 25 than it is in ToC 25, as far as what you do is concerned, and gear honestly shouldn't affect your rotation of abilities, only how hard they hit for.

Burst fights, the higher crit can win at. In the long run though, you'll have more AP and spellpower (significantly so). A good test of how this works is to take a 5 minute dummy test, if you get your hands on Marrowstrike and Edge of Ruin. Try it first with the one, and then the other, and see what the difference is between agi/crit/AP weapons and crit/Str weapons.
