Dear All. I thought I would shape-shift out of treeform for a while and try something new but have hit a little dilemma and would greatly appreciate some help.

The short story - is there a viable hybrid kitty/bear spec that can give me reasonable dps/tanking dependent on just changing gear? My feeling is that this is no longer possible...

The longer story - I am MH in the guild and greatly enjoying the role in progression content but have become disillusioned and not really required to help out with healing on heroics/Uld and Naxx-10 mans etc for undergeared people (we need to give new healers experience etc.). The problem is that I am often needed to make up numbers. Sometimes as a OT bear and sometimes as kitty melee DPS and three specs don't fit into two... or do they? I'm currently off-spec'd out-and-out bear.

As far as I know, you can OT (read: tank L82 adds, not swap tanks on Northrend Beasts) in a dps spec with tank gear. You get the crit immunity in the dps spec and can survive well enough. You'll be missing the heavy duty talents like Protector of the Pack and Natural Reaction, but those are hardly necessary for something that isn't hitting like a raidboss.

I just run a full tank and dps spec, myself. Someday I'll make another druid to do boomkin and tree again. :P

It'll depend on how much DPS you want to do. I took 5 points from Feral Aggression and added them to Shedding Attacks and King of the Jungle in order to make kitty spec viable. By viable, I mean I can generally compete with the lesser DPS in a raid. The spec is mostly useful for DPSing heriocs and other badge runs when we have an abundance of tanks and heals. Remembering back to a post in the 'Bored Druid Thread' I think Maz also has run with a similar build, though I won't put words in his mouth.

I don't think I've heard of a feral both tanking and DPSing well on progression content in the same build. However I've been known to miss stuff too. ;-)

I tank heroics in my kitty spec with my tank gear on. I even offtank adds(Faction Champs) in regular 10 ToC the same way.

It's really about what your healers can handle. A bear in cat spec with tank gear equivalent to ToC 10 gear will be at about what a bear would be in tank spec with naxx 25/Ulduar 10 gear imo.

I DPS in a mix of DPS gear and tank gear with a tank spec and easily do 3k self-buffed.

It's not 5k like the crazy Rogues, but it's just as much as the Ret Paladins in our raids. Which is a little sad, actually. On Twins I was third on DPS. Helped that we only had to switch twin once so I could get off some nice 5pt Rips and stuff.

Thanks for the info all - tried DPS'ing with my current tank build and just a few bits kitty-gear in Uld-25 last night and hit around 2.5K DPS which was fairly low down in the raid list (not entirely dismal though). Think I'll respec Kitty and gear for Bear as most of you seem to do, given that my tanking will be mainly for heroics. Thanks again.
