The minimal research I've done, and word of mouth, has always told me that GCD caps at 1.5 for mages. However, I've always had the fleeting suspicion that it goes down as low as a second. I don't have any addons or anything that show a number on the ability when GCD is active, just a little sundial animation.

Any info for me? If it's true... then I can keep on stacking haste and see what that does ^_^

As I understood it, GCD goes down to 1.0s, at least for spells. I'll see what I can find to confirm, though.

Edit: Info may be old and have changed, but this is what I was working off of:

Because of the general global cooldown on spells of 1.5 secs, spell haste effectively had a cap on it for casters. This has changed with patch 2.4 — spell haste also reduces the global cooldown for spells, to a minimum of 1 second. However, spell haste still reduces the actual time spent casting, which can be advantageous when dealing with spell push back or trying to avoid interrupts

Beat me to it, was going to post the same thing. Yep gcd decreases with haste down to one second.

Laying in bed after waking up before getting ready for work and posting on an iPhone should no longer be allowed imo.

Thanks guys, thanks a ton. I'll update my frost post accordingly.

Do you have to have a certain amount of haste to reduce the global cooldown to 1 second? That's something that confuses me about the haste stuff.

According to WoWWiki, to get the GCD to 1, you'd need 50% spell haste, which is 1639.5.

Soooo... I'd imagine you aren't gonna get that.

Three helpful formulas:

% Spell Haste at level 80 = (Haste Rating / 32.79) //32.79 is what it takes to get 1% spell haste. This formula will tell you your percent reduction.

New Casting Time = (Base Casting Time)/(1 + (% Spell Haste / 100)) //This forumula will tell you the new casting time of a spell with your current haste. Note: Use the lowest cast time you have available through talents, so consider -.5 cast time ones.

Haste Rating needed at level 80 = ((Base Cast Time / Desired Cast Time) - 1) * 32.79 * 100 //This formula is interesting. It is the amount of haste needed to reduce a spell, or set of spells, by a specific amount of time. So, base cast time is the time it takes to cast those spells with no haste. Desired cast time is the amount of time you want it to take WITH haste. It will tell you how much you need. -1 second on 7.5 seconds of casting (to 6.5) requires 243 haste rating, according to wowwiki.

Basically you will only hit with by using all of your cooldowns (bloodlust/heroism+potion of speed+icy veins) or an outside buff that provides a haste bonus. (like the spellstealable buff from RoS for instance).

Blowing all cooldowns + pots and with a heroism up means that I can cast ABlast in 1.1 secs which makes for a great 20secs of finger-jabbing madness. Maybe there's a spellsteal from the Faction Champs in there as well - hard to tell as it's all so damned fast. And a greatly reduced gcd means I don't have to wait before going again. Far more fun than clicking pre-WoTLK hunter macros imho
