A Question about Chimera ShotFollow

Per the EJ forum:

MM Shot Sequence:
Marksmanship
Priority Ability
1 Kill Shot
2 Chimera Shot
3 Arcane Shot
4 Aimed Shot
5 Steady Shot

Chimera is said to be the second in priority (it is assumed the you start with serpent sting). Unlike kill shot you can shoot chimera at any time (not restricted by enemy HP), but I would say it is not 2 in priority but should be shot when serpent is almost over (or enemy is about dead, whichever is first). It is almost a shot that is special and does not belong in a priority listing.

Is this correct or am I not thinking correctly?

Chimera is your heaviest hitting shot in MM aside from kill shot, this is why chimera shot is second in the rotation and is still second even in an arp MM shot priority.

I realize it is my second heaviest hitting shot, I just thought I should let the serpent sting tick down to almost its end before hitting chimera to get the full effect of the damage is all. I did not realize it would cause so much damage (crit'ed) as Aethien said without letting it tick down.

How much damage serpent sting has done has no effect on Chimera.
The serpent sting effect simply does damage equal to 40% of how much damage your serpent would do if it ticked for the full duration.

Edit: and the above numbers are for my char in a 25 man raid.
My Kill Shot Crits for about 18-20k, Aimed for 7.5-8k, Auto and steady for about 4.5-5k.

Actually a few guild hunters have also had this question, so it is a good one to bring here.

Many of our hunters had 2 ideas about Chimera:
1) Like you they thought you had to let SS wind down to get the most benefit from Chimera's abilities.

2) They thought that they were loosing DPS by over-writing the SS debuff when firing Chimera.

Chimera is like when you come home to your wife in that "little number". Not only do you get the sexiness of the shot (her), you get a bonus effect of refreshing SS (the cute little outfit she's displaying). In fact, when I play SV I am jealous of that shot (the bud's HAWT girlfriend) because my main shot (the ball and chain) just does one thing for me, maybe 3 in a month if I'm lucky (I'm sure I don't need to point out what here).

You need to treat Chimera as a high-DPS shot that needs to be fired every possible time you can (I mean, wouldn't you tap that hot chick as often as you can?). There is a reason it's the top of the talent tree, to push it's fire time back is loosing DPS (hrm, the hot super-model or the bag lady, which one do I pick?).

Ok I got ya, I had thought you had to let it tick down to get the full effect but this makes more sense now. Thank you all for clearing this up for me.

This is why I love this forum. Ask a good question and get a good answer. I try to do my own research but its nice to be able to ask here for clarification on things like this.

I always assumed it was best to use it until just before the SS wears as well. I learned something today!

To be fair, my hunter is only 55 and BM...

Unless you completely like ignore Chimera i don't really think it's possible to not be able to ever refresh SS because of cooldowns on it or other shots.
