Priestly PVP NewbFollow

Hey all I'm back and trying again to PVP on my Disc priest. I am 80 and have been for a while but have pretty sucky gear. I have mainly crafted/rep stuff with just the odd naxx drop as haven't really played for months apart from old school runs to boost my hubby and get his l60 gearsets and the odd bit of raptor mount questing.

Thanks to some help from Theos PVP lair a while back I got what I am hoping is a reasonable PVP spec going. I have slightly deviated from the cookie cutter to fit my current playstyle but hopefully not enough to break me. I am going to try out a few specs until I find one I am happy with.

My main question is gear and glyphs. I read in one of the threads on here that frostsavage was good to run with for a beginner and I have that atm. I also have sky saphire amulet and I have some runed mana bands on the way over. I also have 22 wintergrasp marks atm so when I get to 25 I will be investing in the pvp trinket to replace my egg of mortal essence.

I have no clue though what I should be aiming for weapon wise, if my enchants need adjusting etc. Any advice/ideas/random criticisim all taken on board.

Nice to see you back!

You can't have a PVP weapon until you get (reasonably) good at arena, so whatever you're using for PVE works fine there. There's also a crafted cloak, the Cloak of Crimson Snow (?), which has resilience on it. After that you just start getting your honor gear. This goes faster if you're willing to do some arena. The rating requirements for upgrades also don't seem that bad this season. I think the Furious robe, for example, is only something like a thousand. I haven't stepped foot in arena this season but I'm sure others here have and can add.

Glyph-wise, I'd consider Pain Suppression almost as mandatory as Penance for PVP. For the third slot, PW:S and Inner Fire are popular. Or else Smite or whatever else depending on playstyle.

I know you said you're happy with your spec but because I am nosy like that, I just want to say that a cute pixie dies for every point you don't put in Divine Aegis.


Edit: I'd also personally recommend getting four set pieces first for the bonuses before the other honor gear.

Don't neglect hit when building your set, you will want some for offensive spells and dispels. Missing on a pally bubble or a mage's Iceblock is irritating. There is one pvp trinket with hit on it that may be of use.

Since Mass Dispel is a dispel mechanic wouldn't that be spell penetration rather than hit rating? My priest is 76, and i'm gonna be focusing on disc pvp healing also.

Mass Dispel is binary. Either it hits or it does not. There are no partial resists.

And something to remember, holy spells need no spell penetration. No one has holy resistance. Your dots and Mind Blast would benefit from it though.

You want to get about 4% hit rating for PVP (6% to get by racials and talents for certain classes). The neck, cloak, and either one other piece or a couple of gems will do it.

Spell Penetration is a different thing from hit. It's for getting past resistances. There is no Holy resistance, so this applies to your Shadow spells. Bear in mind that this includes fear. I believe the cap is something like 130, which is extremely hard to do in honor gear alone, without sacrificing a lot of other stuff. I get it when it's easy (cloak enchant, for example), but accept that I really can't focus on it at my level of gear.

There's a good explanation of the difference between Hit and Spell Pen in this thread from Arena Junkies. Basically what it says is, if you imagine your old D&D dice, when you cast a spell at someone, the dungeon master will first roll to see whether it hits or misses. There is then a roll to see whether it's resisted. Hit affects the former. The target's resistance to the particular school and your spell pen will affect the latter.

W know I said I was happy but pah a girl can change her mind. I did wonder about the wiseness of that decision when I did the spec. What to sacrifice though? It is hard, I was wondering about maybe this:

I know I loose the 10% damage on Smite and Penance but when I engage my brain I realise that I very very very rarely use penance as offensive and tbh rarely use any offensive at all apart from dots.

The bonus to my crit should work nicely with DA to get extra heals but my next conundrum is: Is it worth loosing reflective shield to fill out Inspiration?

I am looking at arena as I think my hubby wants to have a bash with his paladin. We may well suck a lot but at least we can blame each other. Oh and I am 5 months pregnant so I can blame my hormones as well.

I am going to get the pain supression glyph to replace my flash heal one (still have that from my raiding days) but will probably keep my DS one for now. I got that cloak as well. I look all shiny and red and black although I had to change my hairstyle to match...

As it happens, I am much nosier when I don't feel like working. Like now.

I'd drop Improved Renew from a Disc PVP spec. Mathematically it doesn't do 3 points worth of good.

The spec for Smite or not question is just personal to how you play IMO. Nothing wrong with stopping at Inspiration or continuing on to Searing Light.

This is my Disc spec. It's not entirely conventional but like you I tweak for playstyle. What works for arena players is not necessarily what's best for battlegrounds, world PVP, etc. I used to spec for Smite but I just wanted the points back. This is a very defensive spec. I use my crazy Holy spec when I want to go on offense. Smiley: smile

I, however, am hardly the metric by which PVP specs should be measured, unless it's to do the opposite. Smiley: lol I look at specs a lot on Arena Junkies or the SK-Gaming rankings, because I just happen to be a spec junkie (also see: don't feel like working). Here's a summary of what I see:


Almost everyone has-
Unbreakable Will
Silent Resolve, Improved Inner Fire
Meditation, Improved Shield
Mental Strength, Soul Warding
Focused Power
Focused Will, Power Infusion
Renewed Hope, Rapture, Aspiration
Divine Aegis, Pain Suppression
Borrowed Time
Penance

Most people have-
Inner Focus
Mental Agility
1 point in Grace (hardly ever 2)

Almost nobody has -
Twin Disciplines
Martyrdom

That leaves these being the "swing" talents for those extra point decisions, along with whether or not you want to spec Searing Light or put more points over in Holy -

Improved Fort - if you're having to fend for yourself a lot and are prioritizing survivability
Absolution - if you have mana issues and use dispels more often than flash heals
Reflective Shield - if you end up one vs. one a lot
Enlightenment - works very well for people who itemize for haste, which is all the rage right now
Improved Flash Heal - if you have mana issues and use flash heals more than dispels

Edited because I left off Improved Mana Burn. Honestly I see almost nobody with this one anymore. Mana Burn in its present form is teh suck. I could spam Mana Burn at a pally or druid and run out of mana WAY before he does.

Yeah, i understand this part. But what is happening when you drop mass Dispell on an ice block or divine shield and you get an "Immune" message where mass dispel doesn't remove the immunity effect? Presumably if it were a miss you would see "Miss" instead. So if you get immune, is that simply that classes -30% chance to be dispelled talent at work and if so is there any way to decrease that through a certain stat?

May be a good way to go. I don't really prioritise haste so have left off enlightenment in favour of picking up Inner Focus which I love for the crit bonus as well as the mana saving nature and the extra spell warding for extra survivability against other casters. Although wondering how worth it the full points in spell warding are and if it may be worth me picking up a point or two in improved flash heal instead.

Speccing is hard...

To elaborate on that; there isn't specifically a cap, but each point of spell penetration counters 1 point of resistance. Hence that 130 is what the srs bsns pvpers aim for, because it's precisely enough to counter abilities like Shadow Protection. Furthermore, it's fairly easy to achieve 75, which is what is needed to counter an improved Gift of the Wild. It's more or less the 'base' amount to aim for *if* you're going spell penetration. The cloak enchant and two blue gems take you to exactly 75. Whether you should do it as a priest is another question though - for unholy or frost DK's, for example, getting 130 spell penetration is almost mandatory because most of their DPS comes from spells and they do not want even partial resists. For priests, it's more of a gamble; the only spell you generally really can't afford to get a resist on is your fear - you shouldn't grab spell pen purely for your DOTs, Mind Blast or SW:D. Grabbing 75 is probably the safer gamble, though in this choice you also need to keep in mind that a bunch of the buffs that give resistances are dispellable by you.

I don't know why you would get an "Immune" for divine shield or ice block. I don't think either of those are protected from Mass Dispel. Maybe it was Divine Plea? I think that can be immune to Mass Dispel.

I really don't recall what message is sent when you miss, I guess I am more focused on watching for the "removed" message.

You know what's weird? Every time I MD a mage's ice block (and ZOMG IS ANYTHING MORE FUN??) I see "Immune" float over his head, but then the ice block goes away anyway. At first I assumed it was just coincidence on account of other people throwing spells at him too, but it happens every single time. No idea why.

You always get an Immune message when you disspell an iceblock or bubble.
I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that normally you wouldn't be able to dispel anything from a bubbled paladin or a iceblocked mage.

What Aethien said; if my knowledge about how the game works is anything close to correct, the thing is that Mass Dispel technically is an AOE 'damage' spell that doesn't deal damage, and that the dispelling effect is done by something else (possible an extremely short debuff on the target). Which would mean that casting Mass Dispel on a bubbled/blocked target will cause an 'immune' to pop up to the actual AOE spell after which the actual dispelling element gets rid of the immunity anyway.
