I had finally reached level 50, and learned mutilate via the talent tree. It is so wonderful, I almost forgot to train. Went to the trainer and learned new ranks of ambush, kidney shot, evasion and... mutilate? Am i missing something? I am not complaining by any means, more damage for the same energy cost, but why the rank 2 at the same level you can acquire rank 1? I tried my own research, looked online on various forums and asked *gasp* even trade chat to no avail. This being my first rogue, my history for their talents is hazy, can anyone tell me why you get a rank 2 ability the same level you get rank 1?

(also, have played a shaman, hunter, warlock, death knight and druid to reasonably high levels and have seen nothing like this)

I don't remember the old trees, but Mut could have been available around 40 back in the day, which means at 50, you'd get rank 2. At least, that's what I'm assuming. Alla shows getting rank 1 at 40 and rank 2 at 50, but still, I'm not positive. I'll try to find an old talent tree, but that's just a guess out of thin air.

Edit: Yeah, I don't think the above is the case. Meh... I don't know. Sorry I can't be of more help. Unfortunately, Assassination isn't my strong-suit

I tried looking up if mutilate was ever a level 40 talent, and found no evidence that it was, so is this just a bug after all then?

You can't get Mutilate before Level 50. You need 41 talent points to reach it.

However, Blizzard's required level tags on talented abilities are weird. Look up Death Knight's ability list, and they have a bunch of abilities that are marked as Level 1...when obviously they don't get them until a certain talent or phase in their opening area. It's just Blizzard's way to automatically grant you the ability in the "abilities for this level" logic by triggering a different condition instead.
