So, the AWESOME Pet Class...Follow

#1 Nov 08 2009 at 12:50 PM Rating: Decent
Hi there Lock Forums~ I'm not sure why, though they are all similar caster classes all appeal to me. I currently have 80 Pally(Ret/Prot) Mage(Arcane/Frost) and Priest(Disc/Shadow).
I'm currently side-leveling a DK(64) and Hunter(47). I dropped off DK due to it being too rotation oriented, similar to Pally. Hunter is awesome due to Pet. Send it in and now, thanks to talent, grab 5-6 mobs, AoE, move on. It's sweet.

This got me thinking of the cooler pet class, Warlock. I got a Lock to 42 once, but it was BE on my Ally server so I had to delete her :/ Was VERY sad. This was when DK just came out and I wanted to reserve a name.

So my question is this: With the new BoA gear (I'd have full, 2 trinkets, staff, chest and shoulders all enchanted including Scryer shoulder buff!) is Demonology leveling still possible, or will I have to spend too much time waiting on threat for it to be speedy? I LOVE my big fluffy Void Walker, but if Affliction is going to be much faster, no sense gimping myself. At 80 I know to go Destro, but for leveling I don't know. So many patches, so many things I've forgotten.

Any advice on how YOU leveled and WHERE(as Ally) would be great. Preferably if you did it in a non cookie-cutter way... no more Duskwood or Ashenvale >.<).

Also for the Staff, would Lock prefer the +24 Int (Exalted Thorium Brotherhood Enchant, got it on Mage :D) or +30 SP? Got em both, did SP on Hammer for Priest but never had Staff for Mage so I dunno, plus Lock =/= Mage.

Any input would be great, I love Lock and want to make sure it doesn't end up scrubby.

Can't say about leveling as ally, but 30sp would be better
( locks always prefer sp over int,and spirit for that matter,
at 80 it's hit till capped > sp > haste > crit > spirit ) and you can level as demo with same speed as aff,so you won't be gimping yourself.

Crap. So it's basically 100% the same as Mage gearing lol. Ah well, least I will know where to go!

It's not exactly the same. You actually want to stack stamina as a lock, because of lifetap. The more stamina you have, the more available mana you have. During lower levels you want to look for gear that has stamina, and depending on your spec, either int or spirit. When I was trying to figure out what to do with my lock, I found this thread over at the O-boards to be very helpful.

Demonology is definitely a good leveling spec. I'm using it myself currently and I love that I can send in my Voidwalker and he'll keep aggro off of almost anything.

He can even solo stuff in case I go AFK somewhere. Smiley: grin

I just got Felguard (woo-hoo, went from 46 to 51 this weekend!), and I'm... up in the air about him. He's pretty much exactly what he was advertised to be: a higher DPS pet that can also tank. I'm a lot more nervous with him than with my voidwalker. If things went back, my blueberry would sacrifice to get me a shield, get demonic empowerment to boost his health, and AoE taunt. If things go bad with felguard, I have to fear, Deathcoil, or wait for his taunt to come off cooldown. The guy sucks down mana like a fat kid at a slushy machine; instead of finding myself having to Life Tap for my mana, I have to do it for HIS mana. When he gets low on health I either have to let him die and resummon, or waste some time Health Funneling him.

That said, he tears stuff up compared to Voidwalker. I only use Immolate and Corruption now; Curse of Agony is overkill and mostly wasted. I can NOT wait until 54 when he gets the damage buffing ability.

I think I'll just need to get used to taking some more hits and watching my pulls a bit closer than when I had VW.

Locke, what bad encounters are you referring to? I have 2/2 Fel Synergy and most of the time it's enough to keep his health up there. In any case, Health Funnel is so effective (and drains so little health) that if he gets really low I'll Health Funnel for a couple of seconds and he's back to full. With Fel Armor on (you don't have that yet, do you?) I get back more health than I spend on Health Funnel. Smiley: grin

The one time it has REALLY sucked so far was in Un'goro. One of the quests has you killing bloodpetal flowers, and they poison and suck down hp and mp. Combined with Felguard's horrendously low mana regen and high usage, he was out of mp every other fight, even with constant life tapping.

Only bad situations are those when his taunt fails and I take damage until he can taunt again.

Don't get me wrong, it's worth it for the great DPS he does, but I wish he were as strong at tanking as my Voidwalker.

No matter what class you play there are gunna be some regular mobs that will be your counter. Mobs like this are the felguards counter. While it's still not that bad, mobs that do a mana type drain will end up slowing you down significantly, but they would slow down the voidwalker as well. I think only drain tanking doesn't have this problem due to dark pact while leveling.

As far as which is better, there are some mobs where as deep demonology you'd still want a VW but they are few and far in between. It takes a while to warm up to the Felguard as he needs a little more care, but it makes things go very quickly. As Mazra said, learn to use health funnel, it usually only takes a second or two to bring him back to full while he's being beaten on and takes very little health from you.

I also ended up using Voidwalker for killing groups of enemies 1-2 levels above me in WPL today. Adds seem to come out of the woodwork there! Usually I'd start with Felguard, magically end up with 3 adds, down one or two before the Felguard died, and then I'd .5 second summon a voidwalker to sacrifice for me and AoE taunt.

I probably ended up having this happen like... 10 times. Sloppy, but it worked!

My warlock just hit 60+, and I'm affli spec. Tbh, I love it. The way I rip things apart is so satisfying. I have my voidy on defensive, standing close to me. I'll just run in, DoT everything up from afar, and pull them to me, usually around 5-7 mobs. Then my void shields me up, I lifetap till my mana is back to full. At this point the mobs will be standing close to you and hitting your shield. Thanks to self-heals, my hp will be full by the time they get through my shield, and they'll almost be dead. Normally you don't even have to refresh any dots, just toss a haunt around now and then. And the good thing is you end up with aprox. 70% mana/hp left when executed perfectly. I love leveling it, as I have this feeling of being ridiculously OP.

I have been thinking of switching to demo lately, but I just love this way of grinding. And I will probably offspec demo when I get the cash (hurray for lone alt on different server). As for now, I'll keep with affliction.
