Lazerchicken wants to turn TankFollow

Alright, I am currently running Boomkin with a secondary Healing spec (but I don't let people know that) and I am interested in getting back into Druid tanking. Are there any pointers that you could give me? I am really really confused with the new itemization of leather and tanking, I'm not sure I understand all that now. I'm going to delve into EJ, but sifting through all that is also a pain.

Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way!

Stamina + agility are awesome. Dodge and defense are okay. Expertise is nice until you reach the parry-haste softcap, then its meh, as is hit.

As for druids vs. traditional tanks, here's a blurb I wrote for the tanking guide on my guild's website:

Quote:
Some more fun additions for druid tanking. Since we get our stats from mainly rogue gear we are generally looking at pieces that other tanks wouldn't even consider. There are a couple of melee DPS stats that become more important.

Savage Defense is a druid ability that procs off of Critical Hits, and reduces the damage done by the bosses next physical attack. How much does it reduce incoming damage? Well that is determined by your attack power, of course! 25% of your AP gets applied to damage reduction, so pieces which have crit and AP start to look very good to bears. That being said they usually aren't stacked in lieu of other more traditional tanking stats, but having them on gear is a great bonus. Besides, Blizz did away with tanking stats on leather this expansion, so you might as well keep a look out for some nice +crit & +AP pieces!

Bears also have some wild scaling values. We get 25% more stamina from items then other tanks do. This makes it very tempting to stack stamina. However it is also easier for a bear to outstrip his/her healers ability to keep them alive, by ignoring good +agility or +armor gear that would help reduce the incoming damage.

Think of it this way, the stamina stacker has 60,000 HP and takes 10,000 HP damage per hit, the healers can heal them for 9,000 HP in this time; that's not going to end well. Now a more balanced build may have only 40,000 HP, but now with the extra damage mitigation from armor/agility this tank only takes 8,000 HP damage per hit. Since the healers can output 9,000 HP of healing in this time all is well. While this general concept holds true for all tanks, it usually isn't much of an issue for non-druids. It is extra important of bears to consider however, because they are the most in danger of out-stacking their healers ability to keep them alive.

As for armor, we go wild with this. See that awesome tanking trinket that has +1,000 armor on it. The other tanks are kinda *meh* on it ya? Well not you druid tank, that's +3,700 armor in your hands, very nice indeed! EDIT: (bonus armor doesn't scale like this as of patch 3.0.8, thanks for the heads up guys)

Oh, and the Druid 202 sticky has some awesome tanking advice, definitely a suggested read. ;-)

Sta>Agi>Armor>Dodge>Hit (until hit cap or close)/expertise (until expertise cap or close) > crit >ap>def. I agree with previous poster that there's no point in just stacking straight sta, get your dodge up. You want enough hit so your attacks dont miss, you dont necessarily need cap.

You will have such insane agility with the basic pieces that you don't need to stack crit or ap. Some dps rings, like the EoC one or the one in heroic G-D, give decent agi and stam. Just farm ToC (5-man) for the basic gear. Defense is not that useful but not bad (you will never gear for it but it will show up on some of your items, namely the rings, neck and trinkets that we share w plate tanks). Parry and shield block are, obviously, useless.

I'd say for ToC 10 you probably want mid-30s health in bear self-buffed and high 30s dodge. 26-27k armor.

Expertise is fine up to ~14%. Don't look for it over 6.5%. It is still a decent threat/mitigation stat even after dodge gets pushed off the attack table.

Mainly because of Parry Hasting. Not as big of a deal now that crushing blows aren't an issue any more but still expertise has some value over the soft cap. Not sure if tusk meant the soft or the hard cap.

Horse, how old is that post? We don't get armor multipliers from trinkets. 1749 armor is 1749 armor (which is still a lot).

Either that I've been grossly misunderstanding the change they made in early LK, lol.

You are right but it wasn't Horse who wrote it. The armor that is on the trinkets and other jewellery is still very good to have.

That was someprotein's post, not horse's. You're right, we don't get the multiplier anymore on those pieces.

Awww.... I need to start paying more attention. :p

When did they change this?

Edit2: GAH! 3.0.8? Ouch... sorry, guess that is old info. Looks like I'm going to need to update that post. *sigh*

Would you sacrifice AP enchants for Stamina then? I guess I am thinking AP = threat for Druids kind of like DK's, so I was just wondering.

EDIT: guess I can't spell threat correctly :(

Druids already have some of the best single target tanking and with swipe being 360, AoE tanking threat-wise of all the tanks. I'd get enough stam to be comfortable, then stack agility.

I peak 8k TPS in 226 gear, I'm pretty sure we don't need more threat. :p

I use all Agility enchants except the LW Stam on wrist. Gems are all Shifting except my JC Agility ones.

I'm a stamina junkie, to be honest. I know that without avoidance stacking health doesn't really matter as it only delays your death, but having barely 38k health unbuffed in Bear form just doesn't feel like enough. Thanks to some of you guys, however, I'm now also worried about my dodge rating. It's 37% or so unbuffed or self-buffed. With a Shaman or Death Knight and Kings, it's above 40%. What sort of dodge should I aim for?

I'd shoot for 40% self buffed, that way you'll be closer to 50% with procs and buffs. It's a safe number and easy to attain once you get into ToC 10/25.

EDIT: Not to imply that you can't have it before, but it's easier to maintain that 40% and still have a huge hp pool.

I have 40% unbuffed w/ 38k hp in bear (~30k in caster). I tank ToC 10 regularly, could probably do 25 too though would prefer a little more health I think.
