I'm going to dust off my resto shaman for some pvp. Probably just BGs. I was curious about how to best gem him. Is it worth gemming for spell pen and/or hit? The times I've taken him out it's been frustrating to try to hex the rogue on me and find it being resisted or missing. (This is not when cloak was on, btw.) Ditto with frost shawking the warrior after me, etc. On the other hand, thats not exactly my main responsibility and perhaps just going for straight sp/sta is better. Let me know.

We had a thread about this a little while ago, I'll try to find it.

But as for Hit/Spell Pen, I can tell you those. Or rather, let's let Theophany tell you.

You're a bit (but not much more so) more complicated. Generally, you want 75 spell penetration to get past druid's talented Mark of the Wild.

You also want 5% hit (132 rating at 80) to not "miss" with spells. This doesn't take into account racials, so you may want to stack another 2% hit (184 rating total at 80) on that.

Edit - This thread has some helpful advice.

Thanks; are you saying it's a priority then for me to reach pen and hit cap ahead of spellpower even if I'm healing? That makes sense, just wanted to be sure I'm interpreting correctly.

Yea, pretty much. Spell power isn't as important in Arena, you need so much, but Hit and Pen are very important. Frost Shocks need to make it through, Wind Shears, etc. Maybe PM Theophany for more in-depth advice if you'd like, I can only go so far in PvP.

If you're just looking at BGs, I would (not to sound condescending by any means) not matter so much with Spell pen and what-not because as it usually is; 7v3 at a Arathi Basin base = Stamina and Spell Power > Spell Pen. Though, I'm not sure if you actually wanna build a set for -just- Battlegrounds.

Arenas are an entirely different monster. Spell Pen is very important here. Minimum to get would be about 75 with a "cap" at 135. If you're only gonna be in gear that you have bought with honor and what-not I'd go with about 110 spell pen. Reason being, mages are **** with all of their spell resist. Having a Wind Shear resist and not being able to lock a mage out of their Arcane tree only to be poly'd and counter spelled into oblivion really sucks.

So, I guess I'm saying in regards to battleground: Go with SP\Sta unless you are really serious into min\maxing for an unpredictable circumstance. Which, is obviously hard to do.

In regards to Arenas: Get 110 Spell Pen then move on to SP\Sta. Once you have some ranking and get into the relentless gear, move up to 135 Spell Pen unless you're seeing an absurd number of resists at lower arena ranks. Then, start off with the 135 spell pen.

I used to be a skeptic until my druid saw chain resists on cyclones. Spell Pen then caught a new light in my eye. Needless to say, it's very important.

My two cents.
