Overhealing - an eye opener for meFollow

Was healing a H UP yesterday and was running the overheal meter and was appalled to discover that my overhealing was over 60%. Mostly the hots. I never had to sit and drink and always had over 70% mana left over. I've never watched this meter before, so maybe this is normal.

I almost never have to use norish, usually just have rejuv and 1-2 lifebloom running on the tank, group AOE when needed. Should I be concerned about this or not?

And on a side note: Is there a hps I should be aiming for? I've always thought that if my assigned targets are alive at the end of the fight, then I did my job, but I plan to make this toon my main raiding toon, and I don't want to get into really sloppy habits for higher level content.

Thoughts/advice please.

Your group is not taking enough damage for your HoTs to be worthwhile. They're probably way overgeared for that UP run. As you get into harder content, your overheal will go down and your effective healing will go up. If you're in ToC or Ulduar hardmodes and at 60% overheal, I'd be more worried. You are not, after all, a Paladin.

From your description I'd venture you had a good group, and while your gear is still a work in progress, I'd imagine you are probably feeling ready to move on to other content. Of course, since you have some Naxx gear, I'm guessing you already have perhaps? :-)

As for over-healing, it is going to be high a lot. Druids do have an insane amount of healing potential. It's not unusual to be on top of the healing charts during a raid and still have 60% overheals. The amount of overhealing you do will be highly fight dependent and variable, of course. Some of this comes from keeping HoTs on targets as insurance. Pre-Hotting allows for the immediate use of swiftmend, and gives you more time to react to a dropping health bar. However it tends to raise the overhealing, and can waste a lot of mana when done unnecessarily.

As for HPS wise there isn't a "magic number" really. Like you said as long as everyone lives, then that's what matters. Your spell power and mp5 numbers should be fine for Naxx.

Other advice:

The Wispcloak (tailoring) is a relatively cheap upgrade cloak-wise. It's not terribly well itemized for a druid, but it can serve you well for a while. Of course, if you have terrible luck in cloak drops (like I have :p) you'll find yourself still doing t9 content with it... I love the off-hand btw. ;-)

You'll want to grab Moonglow and Nature's Splendor from the balance tree. Feel free to drop points from Nautralist and perhaps one from Natural Perfection (or some other place if you prefer), since you really won't be using Healing Touch anymore outside of a Nature's Swiftness Macro.

Swiftmend glyph can be very helpful, as well as the Wild Growth glyph when raiding. However if you prefer the Rebirth glyph, that's fine too. While the rebirth glyph only has situational usefulness, it can save a wipe when used effectively.

You can also read the Druid 202 sticky for more ideas and helpful hints! :D

(Edited my wonderful run-on sentences.)

On my druid, if there's not a lot of raid damage im about 60% overheal.
If there's a fair amount, im around 45%
if im doing ToGC im around 30%
if one of our healers dies in ToGC on twins, im around 10-15%.

Basically I look at overhealing as how much more we are capable of doing as healers. Never worry about your overheal, especially if you're top heals. Overheal only matters if you are running out of mana. And if you are running out of mana as a druid you're probably doing something wrong.

Since lower ranks of spells now cost just as much as the highest rank, there's no reason to try and avoid overhealing. As long as your mana efficieny isn't suffering then I'd trust in the old saying of "rather safe than sorry." 0% overhealing isn't very nice if your "Deaths" meter is going apecrap.

Overhealing is a thing of the past. Back when you would have almost all of your spell ranks on your actionbar (or at least the ones with the highest mana efficiency) and watched the meters closely for overhealing. Now, if your mana regen can handle it, you can just toss out heals left and right without worrying about it.

Only fight I know of where overhealing might be bad is Anub'arak in Trial of the Crusader 10-man. Because you have to balance people's health around 25% or so in the final phase to make it easier.
