Dual spec worth the price of soloing group quests?Follow

As the FAQ here is in desperate need of updating, I reluctantly went to the o-boards to see if I could find a leveling guide there. They have one stickied, with a particularly lengthy debate on whether affliction or demonology is a better tree for leveling. Generally the consensus seems to be that Affliction is better for normal quests due to the minimal downtime, but that demonology is better for group quests because you can solo them.

From your experiences is this true? Or is the downtime of demonology comparable to the affliction tree? For the last couple of levels I've been drain tanking in Zangarmarsh and I'm quite enjoying it, but the idea of soloing group quests intrigues me as well, so if affliction does indeed have a lower downtime I may buy dual spec for my lock.

it's worth getting. in the long run.. regardless of how little you play and respec.. eventually the cost of respeccing will out weigh the cost of having duel spec

With proper use of the infernal most 2,3, and some 5 man quests can be done quite easily as affliction. I dual specced my new lock at 40 and only went to the felguard spec a handful of times, and a few of those I wasn't able to solo anyway(damn aggro wipes). So you can stay Affliction and get most group quests done, however if you have the spare gold dual spec won't hurt. Your probably gunna end up with it at 80 anyway plus it gives you the added benefit of learning the other trees while leveling instead of changing at 80 with no clue about timing or which spells work the best.

Yeah, getting the 1k gold won't be a problem as I have an 80 already, but I'd rather not spend it if I don't need to. Thanks for the infernal idea, I hadn't thought of that! I did pretty well earlier, I was able to solo the two elite nagas in Zangarmarsh, although the warrior one took two tries.

I was lvl 80 by the time dual spec was added to WoW.

Started out as demonology and lvled to 80 as that. I don't know of any downtime you mentioned. Maybe whomever told you it had downtime didn't know the spec well enough.

That said, demonology is a great spec for solo things, including most quests.

The other spec I went with is destruction, which I use for raids.

As for affliction, I never tried it. Just heard that with a good group, DOTs just don't have enough time to tick, which results in low dps.

It's not really useful until you get to lvl 68-70 or so, but I have a 51/20/0 solo spec that I also use for my second, levelling lock. It's very good, I can solo just about everything with it, Chillmaw for example is a joke (if people would stop stealing my adds, that is). You get all the goodies from affliction, and a better voidie, more stam, spellpower from demo. I think the important thing is getting better threat for the voidwalker. With the talent, I can have corr and coa up, plus healthfunnel and the occasional shadowbolt, and stay at around 100% threat. Improved healthfunnel means that I can heal through most stuff, and at the same time I get healed to full hp by corr and fel armor. It does take some time, but it's not bad, and it just fits so well together.
The destro talents that you'd normally take in an aff build isn't that useful while levelling anyway.

Dual talent is very useful for me, I have a destro raid spec (used to be aff, will be again in 3.3) and the above soloing spec. I don't PvP, but otherwise that would also be an option for a second spec.

Yeah, I'm not even using the VW right now because I pimped my lock out with some green and blue lvl 80 gems and she steals hate off of him with just a couple of ticks of Corruption lol. Having better threat with him would be very useful. Which talents do you use in the Demonology tree? Right now at 64 I've got 3/3 in Demonic Embrace and 1 in Imp. Healthstone. I was planning on getting the 2nd point in there, and I was thinking of doing Fel Vitality, Demonic Brutality, and Demonic Aegis, but not really sure what else to spend those points on.

When you try to solo some grp quest mob, with void + aff ofc ,always let your void to fight alone for 30s or minute ,health funnel when needed.after that you start dots.
