About to ding 80Follow

#1 Oct 22 2009 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
I'm about to ding 80 on my rogue and I spent most of the time leveling him versus digging
through mechanics and theory forums about the best rotations/gear combos etc. They seemed
more involved with established rogues that already had the experience and gear to back it up.
Well I'm not established and my gear isn't the greatest so I have a few questions to help me along the way.
I am looking at my stats, and wondering where to go from here. I'm planning on staying in Mutilate spec.
-What does my hit have to be at? I have the +5% hit talent tree spec, but it doesn't seem to reflect that in my character stat sheet. If I remember right hit should be around 8%, does that mean I only need 3%?
-I was always told to stack agility, period. Does this still apply when I hit 80? Most of the gear is agil/stam now.
-Do I choose crit rating over attack power or the other way around? I've been choosing attack power over most things, but my crit is in the lower 20% range. What should I shoot for in the crit/AP department as a new 80?
-When does expertise/armor pen come into play? I was reading a theory forum that was really emphasizing the need to be expertise capped and then another thread about the importance of ArP.
-On my first 80, rep grinding was big because of the Exalted rewards. Since Blizz is pretty much handing the stuff out for free, are there any rep rewards that are worth grinding for anymore?

To me, the stats are the hardest part. Once I figure what I should be going for and what stats are better than others I can find the gear based off of that.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can provide!

For Mutilate the hit "cap" you want to shoot for is closer to 15%. Capping poisons is pretty much your most important goal. The Precision talent doesn't show up on your sheet, but it still applies to your overall hit rate so you can get 9-10% hit in gear and let the talents take care of the rest.

Agility vs. Attack Power is going to depend upon a lot of things. It's largely based on what kind of gear you have (where last I heard, people only really stressed AGI over AP when you had the 4 piece tier8 bonus going), but it also needs a bit of common sense. For example if you have two items with roughly identical stats, but one has 40agi and the other has 100ap you'll likely get more overall damage from the gear with the 100ap on it. Of course that also doesn't factor in how AGI scales with BoK and grants crit when AP doesn't do either, so the proper answer to AGI vs. AP will always be "use a spread sheet".

You want as much as both as you can get. With rogue-oriented gear you're going to wind up with a lot of both no matter what you do. Also, spread sheet.

Expertise is always important for any melee DPS and it's relatively easy to cap, especially with all the gear available these days. The cap is 214 rating which comes out to +26 expertise which equals 6.5% dodge/parry avoidance. I never felt ArPen was all that beneficial to a Mutilate rogue since most of our damage isn't mitigated by armor in the first place. It isn't bad for us, but there are much better stats to shoot for first in my opinion. Since ArPen got nerfed a few patches ago I don't know how useful it is to stack anymore for anyone. And use a spread sheet...

No not really anything I can think of. Trial of the Crusader Champion and badge rewards largely destroy anything you could get from rep grinding anymore. Knights of the Ebon Blade and the Sons of Hodir still carry the head and shoulder enchants respectively so I'd still grind those.

Thanks for the the help. I'll have to work on my hit/exp cap a little bit more as they are lacking. Also I'll poke around the forums for a good spreadsheet to help me out.
I was still planning on doing Ebon Blade/Hodir for the augmentations so I'll get those. I just couldn't think of anything else that would be worth grinding so long for.

Are there any AH pieces that I should consider picking up right off the bat? I don't mind dropping a few thousand gold down for pieces that will carry me through for awhile.

Outlaw was pretty spot on. As for new Daggers from the AH - the librarians paper cutter is sufficient. Should be <100g. Do the daily heroic and reg (for the extra rep reward turn ins) every day. Getting a the freebie T9 shoulders with 30 (or 35) triumph badges will be your quickest and biggest upgrade.

Another little tip, only b/c you aren't on my server - everfrost chips. It's the fastest, easiest way to grind hodir rep. They are the little shards sticking out of the snow, usually around the outside of that whole dun niffelem area. 350 rep each, and there are usually 4 or 5 of them out at a time, with a respawn of about an hour.

Good luck!

Edit - work on hit before exp. Exp is only essential on lvl 83+ raid bosses, but elsewhere it does help.
