Question About Tenacity Pet SpecFollow

#1 Oct 20 2009 at 9:24 PM Rating: Default
My wife and I decided to start on a fresh on a new server leaving our 80s behind. Im playing a hunter and she is a Spriest. Its been a very long time since i have played a hunter (I'm talking back in the first year of WoW). I did some resaerch and decided on a tenacity pet to tank for us while questing. I am specing BM to buff up the pet, and will switch specs at lvl 80 if we decide to raid.

We just hit lvl 18 and I started looking at my pets talent tree. I dont want to know what the best spec for a tenacity pet is, rather I would like to know if there are certain talents that are a must have. I would normally spend time figuring this out by trial and error, but our play time is limited right now due to my wife being 7 months pregnant. I have checked the pet section in the hunter FAQ, but Ive seen a few people post that the thread is becoming out dated. So Im just looking for some confirmation.

Thanks in advance for the help and advise.

The answers are in the sticky see this site as pointed to there.

As pet talents are slow to come because you need to be at level 20 and only get the next talent every 4 levels it gives you plenty of time to think about them but i can give my thoughts on them.

You need 3 points in the first tier so at low level you have two choices and that is either more damage or more health believe me it makes little real difference at lower levels . I usually go for "Charge" first and "Cobra Reflexes" as i like the faster attacks but if preferred "Great Stamina" 3 points to get at the "Blood of the Rhino" talent in tier two is probably better as you will probably be going after higher level mobs as a team.

The Boars are my favourite low level pet but bears do have "swipe" so i guess you are going with a bear ?

My suggestion is getting two pets and talent them differently so you can see the differences in the tier one talents , i know some will say that is a waste of time but is the easiest way to see the differences , if you go full BM you get extra points for your pet talents so you can pick up any talents you missed anyway.

As you are going to team up with a priest it really does not matter what pet you use as she can always throw an extra heal on your pet but Tenacity pets do get Thunderstomp at mid levels which is a great crowd puller , and get the heal pet talent not the revive pet one as why waste points when a priest can do it for you.

One last thing is keep 'cower' in the pet bar as i think it still has a habit of turning itself on and that is the last thing you need.

edited to say there are no real set ways to talent pets although i bet some will say there is and all the talents are useful it depends on which way you intend to use them , i usually go for a mix of damage and keeping pet alive.

Thanks for your opinion. I will read that thread you posted. I thought about getting a bear, but right now im using a crab. I like the move Pin. Being a former bear druid I know how useful swipe is, so I may pick one of those up as well. I thought about skipping most of the damage talents for now, but Im worried that without them my pet may not be able to hold aggro off of us. Ill play around with it and see what works and what doesnt and tweak where neceassary.

I have not tried a crab at low level but they are pretty good , as for holding aggro if you hit a mob hard enough no matter what pet you use i can almost guarantee that mob will come after you , i can say getting the pet more focus will help and as far as i know the more damage a pet can do the more it will have a chance to hold aggro so that is a fun thing to think about and that is why i said it makes little difference at lower levels , i have tried the pets both ways from low level and i can always break the pets aggro if i try . As a hunter we have so many ways to escape now or divert the mobs attack i doubt you will get any serious problems and I would think the pair of you will easily be able to control any mobs that escape your pets attention.

When the pet gets thunderstomp (level 36 i think ) groups of mobs will usually stay on your pet with the occasional runner or that is what i found .

Talents you need are in both BM and your pets talents anyway , anything that allows the pet to be healed better is a must have once you get to about mid levels or that is my take on the pets needs. So more health and better healing should make your pet fun to play with.
