What would be the best type of pet for a hunter? For me particularly i am a level 48, spec into Beast Mastery With a Gorilla from Stranglethorn Vale. It is not that my pet is not doing its job, i am just wondering whether i could possibly have a better pet.

The best tanking pet is a Bear, followed by Crocolisk and possibly Turtle. Bears are most useful in AoE situations, Crocolisks are great for single-target and pretty good for AoE too, and Turtles have Shell Shield which can be very, very nice going up against hard-hitting elites.

The best DPS pet is a Wolf due to its Furious Howl buff.

Crabs are very good PvP pets.

FAQ is outdated on pet choice. I checked first. Smiley: tongue

Gorillas haven't been best since Thunderstomp became a Tenacity talent.

Since I don't have my pet tank often I won't say anything about them, I think Isy hit it aight.

Best DPS pet for BM is Devilsaur, followed by Wolf. Any other spec see quote.

A very good PvP pet for BM is Corehounds, otherwise see quote.

The OP is too low level for a BM-specific pet, but yes, once he hits 60 those are certainly good choices.

Devilsaur is situational, though--there are certain fights where having a gigantic pet does more harm than good (especially when pets tend to be all "hurr durr I likes the lava!" to begin with).

Cats do good DPS for a pet, but they don't do squat for the hunter and they are kind of useless...

If you are BM devilsaurs do better DPS then cats and spirit beast do the exact same as a cat just they do it a little better. Allegedly Raptors do the best DPS as pets for non-51 point BM hunters. (I have not ran any numbers)

If you are survival your pet does about a hundred more dps than MM, but it still doesn't make the cat's good dps worthwhile because the wolf not only does average dps but he buffs the hunter's AP and his.

If you are MM, the AP buff from wolfs is absolutely invaluable.

I will admit that I have Skoll, but that is just for the skin. Although I guess you could loosely categorize that a "better pet" the OP (even though reported as a troll by Yuppley) didn't specify exactly what the better meant.

I went to webster's online and found this

Main Entry: 1bet·ter
Pronunciation: \ˈbe-tər\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English bettre, from Old English betera; akin to Old English bōt remedy, Sanskrit bhadra fortunate
Date: before 12th century
comparative of good

1 : greater than half <for the better part of an hour>
2 : improved in health or mental attitude <feeling better>
3 : more attractive, favorable, or commendable <in better circumstances>
4 : more advantageous or effective <a better solution>
5 : improved in accuracy or performance <building a better engine>

granted this is the adjective form, there is the verb, adverb, noun and verbal auxiliary forms.

1 : greater than what half? for this I would assume you mean you need a level 48 pet versus a level 24 pet, since it is greater than half. the sad thing is you can't have a level 24 pet anymore unless you are levels 24-29.

2 : improved in mental attitude. then any pet other than a crok, they have a bad attitude.

3 : attractive. hrm.. well we can't really tame any "cute" pets those damn little bear cubs are sneaky! It's not going to be a scorpid or ravager, those look like rejects from some B horror film!
favorable. duh.. wolvsiez.

4 : more advantageous or effective. well if you are talking about meeting that beautiful troll priest in a BG, then a spider or crab is the way to go. You will have a captive audience. If you are looking to get away from some creep, the rhino can knock him into tomorrow. for DEEPS.... duh... wolvsiez.

5 : improved accuracy or performance. in this category, sporebats rule. they weaken the armor of your opponent thereby increasing your performance. for DEEPS...... duh.... wolvsiez

I agree with the two bolded parts.

Spider > Crab.

Spider is a little bit squishier, but Bullheaded is ace vs burst damage.
And Since Pin is nerfed to a magic effect web is the exact same only instant and with 20yd range.

Oh, and Roar of Recovery is pure sexyness.

For me, Interwebz has replaced Cake :(

Edit: that makes other cunning pets good options too actually.
I've seen a 2.4k rated hunter with a ravager already (yay 2 sec stun) which although only half as long is a powerful tool too.

Based on the rest of your post, I'm going to infer that Interwebz is your spider and Cake is your crab, in which case let me just say that you come up with the best pet names Smiley: laugh

Not on my server, and not in 3v3/5v5 :P
Plus 2.4k in two brackets suggests that he's skilled and knows what he's doing.
And a 2 sec melee range stun vs a 4 sec root with 20yd range (which is disspellable) sounds like a fair trade off.

@ Norrelicus, I only give my PvP pets fun names though.
I've got Cake the crab, Interwebz the Spider, Kiss the Core Hound (The white one, named after the band) Howlle the wolf (Named after a friend who quit WoW) and Polly the polar bear (Named after the nirvana song)

I had a chimera named Störmblast after the classic Dimmu album, but I dumped it because it sucked.

And Polly the Polar Bear is a cool name Smiley: tongue

Another "best pet" thread, oh well, may as well participate!

I just love cats, mostly because of the looks I can get for them.

But on one of my hunters I decided to get a white polar bear (to go with the cute little NC Blizzard bear).

I'm used to never having trouble with my pets dying, normally, as a matter of fact, I might die once every few days while leveling, mostly due to being distracted and not watching my pet's health.

But with my white bear (who is at the moment only one level below my hunter) I have to continuously watch his health and heal him up. He dies WAY more often than I would like. I have no idea if I did something wrong in choosing his talent points, this is the first time I use a "tanking" pet. But I'm really wondering why he would be considered a tank if he dies so easily?

I've leveled with wolves, wind serpents, and cats, and never had this much trouble keeping my pet alive.
Could it be that this hunter toon may not have the MOST up-to-date gear I can get him? Are a tank pet's stats more reliant upon the hunter's gear than other pets?

My Bear hasn't had any of these problems, I havn't taken any 'Tanking' talents for my Bear, but I do have 'Glyph of Med Pet' and 'Spirit Bond,' increasing the amount of healing he takes from Mend Pet. As for the gear thing, I have mostly questing greens.

Are you taking on more mobs than usual as you expect a 'tanking' pet to be able to take more damage? or is it just against 2-3 mobs?

Well there are a few factors that are probably causing this.

Fero pets have a chance to heal themselves each hit.
Cunn pets can feed on dead bodies to regen health.

BOTH pets do more damage than a tanking pet, meaning the mob will die quicker = less DPS on your pet.

This is considering single mobs.

If you are tanking multiple mobs, they all die pretty quickly if you don't have any tanking points specced. Even if you do have them specced tanking, it's still not like having a warrior around rounding up mobs. Pet-tanking is a high maintenance activity.

I guess I've just gotten so used to my cats causing more immediate damage to the mobs meaning fights have been shorter, so less healing necessary, while my bear causes less damage over time, meaning longer fights, and more healing requirements.

Thanks for the input guys and gals!
