Ive been wondering this for a while so im sure one of you locks will have the answer for me.

As far as i can tell Spell power is the main stat we should be building, providing you are hit capped. Now bearing this in mind why do a lot of locks, inlcuding you guys from looking at your armory use a lot of the SP/Spirit purple gems or the 12SP/HAste Gems? Surely it would better to put in a 23SP gem? The extra SP you get from this gem is surely better than the extra spirit you would get and the socket bonus?

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

Normally, the only reason to gem spell power/spirit is to meet the meta socket requirement which needs two blue sockets and spirit is better than anything else a blue socket can give you(for pve). If people socket spell power/haste it's usually to meet a socket bonus, however with the current socket bonuses and epic gems it's almost always better to put in a pure spell power.

Should point out that spirit = spell power, if you use fel armor.

"Surrounds the caster with fel energy, increasing spell power by 100 plus additional spell power equal to 30% of your Spirit."

Actually, if you have Rank 4 of Fel Armor it gives 180 additional spellpower, in addition to increasing your spellpower by 30% of your Spirit and regenerating 2% of your maximum health every 5 seconds.

Additionally, if you spec into Demonic Aegis you can increase the benefits of Fel Armor by up to 30%.

This is one reason locks don't mind +spirit on gear, and why the best gem for a blue socket is a purified cut that gives +spellpower/+spirit (if you need to match the socket color). This is also why, for PvE anyways, Brilliant Spellthread (+50 spellpower/+20 spirit) is a good enchantment for your legs.

As I pointed out though, you should only use it to reach the meta gem requirement of 2 blue gems. The Purified Dreadstone gives 12 spell damage/10 spirit and with fel armor the spirit converts to a little over 3 damage and another 2 damage with the life-tap glyph giving you a total of around 17 spell damage(a little more with Demonic Aegis). Compare that to a Runed Cardinal Ruby which gives you 23 spell damage and the runed will win every time.

But seeing as how you need the two blue gems for the meta gem you want to try and complete any socket bonus with it that you can, especially if the bonus gives you + spell damage, a matching bonus for +5 damage would almost even things out.

Every piece is different. If you want to always gem an item and achieve the maximum dps by doing so, you should use RhadaTip. It will tell you the best combination of gems for that item.

Thats a really lousy way to advertise an addon, but anyway, respecet for making one.

CCbutch explained it all ,no need for damn addon to teach you how to gem ...

How is that a lousy way? I wrote the addon as an answer to the constant stream of questions like "which gems should I use" or "should I get this item", so it's only natural that I point the mod out to those that still ask those questions.
Now you have a tool that you can use to make always the right choise, based on hard math, no more guessing.
And no, the general guideline reported here (while correct) is simply not enough to know what gemming is right for every item under every circumstance, for example Conqueror's Deathbringer Leggings, you either do the math on a napkin for every item, or you use a tool like RhadaTip, otherwise you are just second-guessing.

I highly recommend this video:

It's about destruction warlocks, but it talks about gems near the end.

I'm sorry I offended you.English is no my native and sometimes I chose bad words to express myself.
I thought you only made that post so you can get more dls on addon.

Was more directed to lazy people unwilling to spend some time to learn about proper gemming.

Again ,respect for making a nice addon, time and will poured into making something that will help other people.
