With the change to TbL will people do this or is it as stupid as it sounds?

Its as stupid as it sounds (I think). The reason the Prot healing worked so well before was the ability to "double dip" on Spellpower coupled with the large survivabilty of the Prot spec. Using ret gear you will only have the Spellpower through your Touched by The Light talent which wont be much. You wont be any better Healer than a Retribution Paladin relying on Sheath of Light.

How far would you get with a "Ret's" mana pool?

Furthermore, this worked so well with Stamina because Gladiator's healing plate gear had large amounts of both spellpower and stamina which turned into even more spellpower. Holy geared prot specced healers had by far the highest spellpower in the game.

The main problems are the mana pool, and the fact retribution Gladiator gear has low strength to allow for stam/resil and also that on some pieces, strength is actually replaced with pure attack power.
