Is Prot/Holy a viable dualspec option?Follow

#1 Sep 25 2009 at 1:31 AM Rating: Good
Just wondering if a prot pally wearing ret gear does a reasonable amount of damage for questing and dailies etc. Would it be that much slower than ret questing? I still have more than 4 zones of quests to do, so if ret will be faster, i'll wait and switch my specs after i've done the quests.

Thanks in advance

I am specced Holy/Prot, when I do dailys and such I always jump into prot spec. Yes, killing a single target or even 2 targets may be slower than ret but you will be goddamn unkillable. The best thing about prot is that you can do mass AoE pulls. You know those quests that require you to kill X amount of this mob and Y amount of that mob? You could do that in 2 or 3 pulls rather than 1 or 2 at a time with Ret.

To summarise. Prot is definitely viable for soloing and questing. Depending on types of quests and types of mobs, ret will normally be a bit faster than Prot overall.

btw.. I level'd Holy, that's a lot slower but it's hard to die too.

If you're going to quest in Prot, go all prot gear.

A lot of your damage from the Prot Tree will come things like Block Value, Strength, etc.

The whole style of leveling as Prot, will be to pull multiple mobs at once, which your tanking gear will help with.

If you're doing prot, you *will* be using a 1h weapon + shield (please, save yourself some embarrassment and don't stick a 2h weapon on in Prot!), so if you're doing that, you might as well don your tank gear too.

If you happen to have a ret set just laying around, then you could stick a couple +crit pieces on, but I wouldn't sacrifice anything with +block value IMO; your main single-target DPS attack relies upon it.

I'm running holy/prot spec and I don't prefer one spec to another; whichever I feel like playing at the time. When I'm doing a quest that I can easily gather up groups of mobs, I go prot. Holy I use when I'm trying a new way of doing something and I don't want to die. Either way we're pretty much unkillable for any quest/dailies. I had tried to dps once in tank gear, using a few pieces of ret gear, and didn't see much of a jump. Although the ret gear that I had on me at the time wasn't anything spectacular.
I always get interested looks when I'm doing the Argent T quests with killing the followers. A pally running by with 15 npcs following always turns heads.

Go Prot Spec and Holy if you're doing AOE grinding. Bloody fast for dailies as well. Also ensure you have a good sword and a shield and put on spike (Depending on what your level. Titanimun is level 70 onwards).

BoS, Righteous Fury up, SoC, Ret Aura = Killing spree m8.

You need to know how much of damage you can take. I ever took 8 mobs at winterspring and still didn't and no mana reduction. As I level i took on more. So you need to see for yourself how much your pally can take.

I had trouble at frist but it just takes some practise on.

Here is the link which I feel it might be useful for you

Echoing most people here, Prot/Holy is very viable. I had a Hunter main pre-Wrath but decided that there were too many DPS and chose Paladin as my way to provide more Tank/Heals. Quest soloing is trivial, no worries at all about damage output. I swapped to a pure Prot spec right after beginning the Isle of Quel'Danas grind and my survivability leapt up and my downtime dropped. No longer did a few adds mean either running for my life or dying, instead it meant a few more dead adds and me ending the fight with nearly full heal or full mana, my choice based on spells cast.

Don't wear Ret gear hoping to speed up your DPS. You need a shield for one thing, and in fact it is better to swap into a pair of Holy spec rings or a piece or two other other good MP/5 regen items to speed you up, as your single most limiting factor will not be either DPS or Health, it will be Mana. Without a healer topping up your mana pool by healing you you'll need to Seal and Judge Wisdom, but that won't hurt you. Even adding in the mana regen from BoSanc you'll end fights with low mana and plenty of health left.

If you go JC be sure to pack your Statues, as the bleed over mana regen is great for reducing down time. And since your mana pool is so very small the best drink for your level will top you up in just a few seconds.
