Dual Spec? or just Ret or TankFollow

#1 Sep 20 2009 at 8:11 AM Rating: Decent
Several questions. Have a 80 tank pally and was thinking of dual spec with ret.

1. Do Rets get a lot of play.
2. Do I need a completely new set of armor playing ret.
3. Can Rets dual wield or do they primarily use 2h
4. Should I just redo talents to be Ret

Not sure what to do any more since tank pallies on my server arent the biggest choice for tanks. I like tanking I like dps on my Hunter and Arms Warrior.

Okay, last question.

If you do dual spec does it just give you a little in each spec?

Maybe more questions since not sure what to do.

Thanks

1. Not compared to tanks. They're pretty comparable with other DPS classes.
2. You really should develop a 2nd set (possibly pick up some off-spec drops when tanking if you haven't already).
3. 2H only.
4. I'd advise getting a dual spec. It'll give you more versatility, as you'll be able to either tank (protection spec) or DPS (retribution spec) at will.

No. You have two completely separate talent specs (including glyphs) that you can switch between (out of combat). The specs have no impact on each other at all.

I'm really amazed that people don't want Paladin tanks on your server. Prot Paladins are currently probably the strongest tanking class.

EDIT: Clarity.

What Tab said.

An easy way to get a dps set will be to get groups together for ToC normal/HC and take dps that wouldn't want the same drops as you like casters and rogues. That way you can grab a fair bit of dps plate and possibly Edge of Ruin or Marrowstrike. I'm doing it the other way around at the moment, I have dual spec but not very good tanking gear so I roll on any tanking gear that the tank doesn't want.

Great and thanks to both of you. Will probably wait till the weekend and do the deed so to speak.

Any good talent sites for dual spec types?

Since am a storage hog, might have some things in bank and also have a ton of HP so maybe something in Champion Hall to tide me over.

ofc EJ is a mine of information:

Prot Paladin

Retribution

Both those guides include talent specs for their relevant classes.

You should not deny picking up dual spec, if you do you're cutting your usefulness in half.

You will get more gear having a tank main, because there is considerably less competition for tanks per raid. Typically only 1-4 main spec tanks in each raid, depending on the fight.

I am a mainspec tank, and despite being very well geared, I'm usually dpsing in my offspec. On the occasion that one of our other tanks doesn't show up, or we need an extra tank, it is very nice to be able swap back and forth to fill the gap.

My biggest obstacle to getting my ret spec geared properly is items with no armor class. Necks, rings, trinkets, cloaks. There are few plate dps wearers(in comparison to all the other dps classes that are out there) but these items are hardest to come by because you'll be competing with all other melee for them, regardless of armor class. Sometimes it's obvious that a particular item, while it might be an upgrade for you, is better off suited in another's hands. For instance, anything with agility instead of strength, those pieces may be an upgrade, some certainly are for me, but they're much better suited for a rogue or hunter, so you should do your best to realize these situations and pass accordingly. Anything that has armor penetration on it - much better suited for a dps class that isn't a paladin.

That being said - I have a few pieces of gear in my ret set that violate what I've just said above, but they were upgrades from what I had, and I was uncontested on the roll.

You will get far more play time as a tank, but having both specs and gear available to perform equally well in both specs, will ensure that you hardly ever have to sit out of a raid due to class balance. Being able to perform dps and tank, they'll likely need you to fill one of those roles, and being a pally you bring valuable buffs they can't get elsewhere, while also being able to pivot between two vital roles to raid success.

I have not sat out of a single raid that I haven't either been late for, or volunteered to sit out of, although this is highly dependent on your guilds needs.
