How much Int is too much?Follow

Disclaimer: The following question is loaded to the brim full of misconceptions on how spell costs and mana regeneration works. If you are new to mage stop reading or you may end up vomiting from the stupid. I have left the initial post in tact so that the veterans can chuckle at my incompetance.

Hey there Magey Folks,
I thought I would address this question to you because… well I just thought I would.

Every Point of Intellect that you have increases your Mana Pool by 15. This is a static number as far as I know.

Every Point of Intellect also increases your chance to crit with spells. This increase is entirely dependent on your level, as far as I know.

At level 80 with something along the lines of 500 Intellect(Int.), you will have 7500 Mana from that 500 Int., and some crit rating to go with that (~5-7%).

The question is, since spell costs are percent based, at which point does the stacking of Int become counter productive?

Since the costs are all percents, there seems to be no gain in having more Mana. As a matter of fact, having more spirit instead of Mana seems like a much much better idea. Theorectically you should be able to get tons of Mana regen, and with a small enough Mana pool have infinite spells. The thing is of course that more Int seems to decrease the effectiveness of your Spirit since Spirit gives a base number of regen, not a percent (So the difference between 20 Mana regained every 5 seconds and 3% of base mana regained per 5 seconds).

This is probably almost impossible to attain since there is hardly any gear out there that does not have Int coupled with Spellpower. I wonder if you could make up for the Crit from your Int.

Edit: Message editted to express the falsiness evident in original post.

spellcost is based on base mana at 80 (with only the intellect you get from leveling) not from gear, so it is a flat cost for everyone to cast a fireball/arcane blast/etc (ignoring talents of course).

So to answer your question, there isn't such a thing as 'too much int'. Granted you shouldn't be gemming for it/enchanting for it etc, but when it comes on an upgraded piece of gear it doesn't hurt you.

Thanks a ton Anobix, but can you explain that a bit more. If blizzard costs 19% of base Mana, how do I know what the base amount of Mana is? Is it just your characters mana with no gear on?

Yep, your mana with no gear and naked is your base mana.

Unless you're a gnome. I think base mana is pre-Expansive Mind, so it's even lower than what you show naked as a gnome.

Talents don't count either, do they? Like Arcane Mind's 15% bonus?

It sucks if they do...

Actually, having a larger mana pool (Int) will increase your regen from Spirit.
The formula that is generally accepted is

MP5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(Int) * Spirit * Base_Regen) * 0.60 rounded up
Base_Regen @ L80 = .005575

taken from wowwiki

Which translates loosely to: Spirit takes a look at how much mana you are capable of storing at the time and regenerates an amount of it accordingly. Anything that affects your mana pool size affects your regen rate, although less significantly than Spirit itself.

What do you mean? You mean of the base mana cost? Arcane mind doesn't increase mana cost of spells, it increases your total amount of intellect that you have by 15% (from gear + base + buffs I would presume).

Awww, I like gnomes! They're cute! Granted I also played a taru taru in FFXI, so my opinion could be slightly skewed.

Yeah, that was my question (whether or not talents were considered base mana or not), thanks.

Because, if +15% int also meant +15% of int worth of spell costs, it would have been far less attractive (still great, but not for efficiency reasons).

[EDIT]

As a kid, I saw that Goosebumps episode with the killer ventriloquist dummy. After that, life-like dolls scared me.

Later on (still a very young child), I saw Chucky. Ever since then, life-like dolls have TERRIFIED me. Like, years later, I can still barely stand to be in the room with one. I won't even watch horror films with dolls as part of it. I just can't do it...

And clowns. I f*cking HATE CLOWNS. At that part in the third Harry Potter movie where this popped out, I was PISSED. THAT ISN'T FUNNY.
