Viable Tank - What's the difference?Follow

Hello,

As stated in another post I'm approaching 80. I started off my DK as a frost tank a few months after wrath was released. I leveled as frost until I reached Northrend. Having accumulated some money I went dual spec and made a blood leveling build. I've come to really enjoy blood. I also leveled another DK to 70 something as unholy and also really enjoyed that.

Now my question is, as of current, are all three DK trees viable raid tanks? The last time I had inquired blood was the ugly step sister and was something used for 5 mans and not really raiding. But looking at the top geared blood DKs on my server, the top four or five were blood tanks.

What are the advantages of tanking blood, frost, and unholy? What are their strengths and weaknesses? I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, and I do apologize if I missed a sticky explaining. But as of current patch are all three of these viable and what things should I consider when finalizing which tanking spec I want to use?

From what I understand Blood is a good single-target tank, frost is pretty much an overall good tanking spec for single target and multitarget, and unholy isn't better than the other ones at either.

Yes. They're all viable but focus on a different field of play. Frost is mitigation, Blood is single-target threat and a large hit pool and Unholy was the king of AOE tanking. Until Unholy Blight got changed; now it's more of a hybrid between Frost and Blood. It's still viable, just not used a lot anymore.

That said, the 'single-target' vs 'multi-target' sentiment doesn't show up until you start doing harder Ulduar bosses with damage dealers pulling off 4500-5000+ DPS.

Getting a handle on how they all work is good. Respecs are cheap, and it's good to know how to use each spec. Or at least have a basic understanding about all of what your class can do.
