And by 'orphaned', I mean he's my first character on a new server. (shakes fist at 10 full character slots.... bah!)

Which means in the short term, I don't have much gold and am relying on whatever gear I receive from drops/quest rewards.

I've read a few recommendations saying arms for levelling, a few others say prot. But which would you say is the least gear dependant option?

I'm sitting at level 12 and I've put my first three points into Improved Heroic Strike since I always seem short of rage. Is this still a good talent for Prot levelling?

update/edit: I've read that Arms is the least gear dependant tree of the three for levelling. And none of the sample Arms trees I've looked at include Improved Heroic Strike, apparently because Arms doesn't really use HS. At what level do I stop using HS?

I can only talk from my experience, and i'm no pro on the warrior class, but I personally levelled to around level50 as arms, then changed over to fury and found it a refreshing break. Fury does tend to be quicker and with a bit less downtime, as bloodthirst heals a fair amount of health whilst fighting.

Warriors are in general a very gear dependant class, but I found as long as I had a relatively up to date weapon that I was fine going with arms.
Also, you don't have to stop using Heroic strike at all, i find it is very good for fury when bloodthirst and whirlwind are on CD.
hope it helps.

I leveled my first warrior all the way to 80 as prot, and I just got my second to 21 as fury.

As far as I can tell, there is no "least gear dependent" spec. That being said, your weapons don't matter as much for prot (outside of instances). They still matter though.

It depends on your play style. Prot can be great for killing several mobs at once and having less downtime, but it takes longer to kill stuff.

Fury is fun because things die quickly, but you die quickly too.

As to Heroic Strike, I probably stopped using it regularly around 30 or so on my prot warrior.

Hope that helped

HS is great to be used on everything. it's the go to rage dump for extra dps (and threat).

Prot got some major buffs to leveling in 3.x, and I leveled from 60-80 as prot. I spent a little time with both arms and fury in that bracket, but prot was superior for my play style.

I can't say much about warriors pre 60 though. I leveled 1-60 in 1.x a long time ago. And warriors are vastly different now.

Much was said in 2.x that fury was the way to go if you had the money to spend on enchants and good gear. But arms sounds good to me now. Weapon specs make a big difference when you only have so much to work with. Poleaxe spec is very nice. 5% crit goes a long way when you have 0 gear with crit rating.

It has been a while since i lvled, but I am an 80 now and I believe if your on a pvp server arms warrior would be best. Back when i was lvling it was superior to fury for pvp. If on pve server it used to be fury.Today it seems there is a split between protection and arms. Some people even have an arms/prot build. When I go to BG's I have more kills as an arms warrior but i last a lot longer as protection. Which I guess instead of kiling more I am holding more horde on me.Shield slam does a lot of damage and shock wave is awesome in BG;s especially if i am by the flag, it slows down the enemy while dealing damage.I guess it would depend on your play style. Oh btw you have more stuns as protection warrior which def. helps in pvp. If you like the kills in pvp go arms or fury, if you like to last long go prot. if your hard to kill you will draw more of the enemy on you and hopefully help will come.

You stop using Heroic strike as arms at about lvl 40 when you get mortal strike and prot still uses it all the way up as far as i can tell but, it's ONLY if you have a LOT of rage (witch you don't normally have). You use Heroic strike a lot Less once you hit lvl 50 as prot when you get devestate.

My buddy and I are PvP lvling warriors, he is prot and I'm arms. Just like mentioned earlier I kill more he dies less, I top the charts the most he isn't too far from me (within 2-3 slots of me on the score board).

For lvling PvE? Arms. It's quick it's easy and you only need a good 2H to do it. take a look at my warrior linked in my sig if you want an idea of what I lvl as. If you are not gunna PvP much don't get Juggernaut, Iron will, and Second wind is a maybe since you don't get stunned THAT much PvE. and if you can stick with ether a mace or an AX then Specc into them other wise skip it since you never know what you are gunna have (I lvled with Nightblade with the Savagery Enchant till I got Destiny witch I put Savagery on also (I love owning BGs). I never Specced swords since it didn't seem worth it to me but it's your call.

Battlegrounds now give xp, which allows people to level up inside them without doing quests. It's still much slower than efficient questing though but may be much more fun for some players.

I leveled from 10-80 as prot and it flew past, you can get groups for instances very easily and even more so now because of the LFD tool. Even when you aren't in instances its very quick to kill mobs for quests because prot really doesn't have as bad a damage output as it used to. I highly recommend leveling as prot because if you learn to tank at a lower level, and become good at it, it should carry over to when you reach level 80 and start tanking heroics.

This is all, of course, dependent on the fact that you don't mind tanking, and if you don't enjoy it, don't do it

LF group tool is ftw option as warrior tank if you like instances. You access instances instantly. Dps have to wait more than 5-10 min to enter, especially on Wednesdays , Thursdays. Means better gear , getting familiar with your abilities , skills etc. Get a shield for easy leveling.
