This is probably a really stupid question, but here goes anyway...

If I am stealthed and behind an enemy with a dagger in my main hand, will ambush work with a ranged weapon? Or is it melee only? Thanks.

a) our ranged weapons are pretty much just for show.

b) it wouldn't say "requires daggers" if you could do it from range

Requires Daggers
Requires Stealth
Ambush the target, causing 275% weapon damage plus 907.5 to the target. Must be stealthed and behind the target. Requires a dagger in the main hand. Awards 2 combo points.

It actually says you need daggers twice. Did you even read the tooltip?

I'm thinking the OP was a bit confused as to whether or not, if he does equip a dagger in the MH, if he'd still be able to use ambush with his ranged weapon (which, I don't know why, may or may not be better damage wise than his dagger).

(Even though you have to be in range to use ambush, and by then, you'll be close enough that it'll automatically use the dagger anyway once you use the talent)

This is indeed the case. Sure it says that a dagger must be equipped, but it doesn't say that attack only works with the dagger. There is a difference between "must have X equipped" and "only works with attacks made with X". I guess it was as stupid a question as I thought it might be, but thanks for the clarification guys.

My apologies on the snarkiness. I guess I didn't understand the question. Are you trying to ambush with a crossbow equipped in...your main hand slot (where it says 'dagger must be equipped...)

No no... he's got a dagger equipped in MH to complete the requirement of "Requires Daggers," (range weapon still in range slot), he was just wondering that even though he's fulfilled the requirements of ambush, if using ambush would use the attack with his range weapon.

He didn't realize that using ambush actually uses daggers for the talent when attacking. A bit of confusion that's all.

OP, the only thing you can do with range is "shoot/throw," You can't use any of your special attacks (like ambush) to use them.

As I'm thinking about the OP's question, a couple other games come to mind. Granted they aren't WoW, but the idea of a ranged sneak attack was used in AD&D 3rd edition, where a scoundrel could add his/her sneak attack bonus damage to the ranged attack if certain criteria was met. The other game was the video game Thief, where if you were in unoticed and hiding in the shadow, you could effectively snipe someone with a bow and arrow as if you had snuck up on the mob and knifed it. Again, those games are not WoW and the tool tip for Ambush specifically says requires dagger, but I can kind of see where the OP might have been coming from.
Although, could you imagine being able to Ambush from range, get a couple of more shots in, having a couple of combo points on the mob, and having a full energy bar by the time the mob got to you? Smells like a win/win situation that woudld be quickly nerfed.
